Advertisers Not Happy with CNN's Lack Of News Coverage

When CNN President Jeff Zucker decided to take the "news" out of the Cable News Network, he hoped it would attract more viewers.

So far, that really hasn't happened. But, it has help attract less advertisers.

Variety writes that CNN's  recently unveiled a new slogan, “go there.” But some ad-buying executives may not want to follow that command.

Skepticism from buyers – a natural element of this yearly haggle – comes after CNN has reworked its positioning . The network, part of Time Warner’’s Turner unit, is relying more heavily in primetime on documentary series and during the rest of the day seeking out stories that help it stand apart from competitors, as it did when it followed the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

Doing so, however, has CNN veering slightly from the pitch it has long thrown to Madison Avenue: For years, CNN has portrayed itself as a high-quality source of straight news, one that ought to command a premium. And the network still inhabits that role. But with its ratings slipping over the long term, and a new emphasis being placed on what buyers view as “entertainment programming” for an hour of primetime, sponsors are pushing for a reworking of the relationship CNN has had with advertisers.

“I’m pretty confident they’ll have to make some adjustments in the market this year,” said one media-buying executive.

One rumor of an adjustment is either Time Warner sells CNN and or dumps Jeff Zucker.

I Need Air

Screen Shot 2014-06-18 at 10.00.22 AM.png

We told you a few days ago that our laptop had given up the ghost and we are in the market for a new one.

We asked FTVLive readers if you would like to help us buy a new MacBook Air so we will be able to update this website while we are on the road.

We set up a donation page and we are only a couple of hundred bucks away from raising enough money to get back in business when we are away from the FTVLive World HQ.

Again, I want to thank those of you that saw in your hearts to throw a few dollars our way. Donations have ranged from $5 to $150 and we appreciate each one.

A couple of people sent us Apple gift cards (see picture) instead of cash. That works!

I really am humbled by those of you that decided to donate. Thanks again!

If you want to help get us to our goal, click on the button below to donate.

Rob Morrison Arrested.....Again!

Cops have clamped the cuffs once again on former WCBS Anchor Rob Morrison.

Morrison was rearrested by Darien police Monday after allegedly violating a protective order and calling his estranged wife more than 100 times over a three-day period last month.

Morrison posted a $50,000 bond on the new charges of violating the protective order and second-degree harassment.

Past threatening and breach of peace charges against Morrison were dropped in April after he completed a 26-week program for people involved in family violence.

Morrison is married to fellow television journalist Ashley Morrison and the couple has one young son.

According to court records, Ashley Morrison showed up at Darien police headquarters on May 25 “physically shaking” and “in a very fragile state” to report that her husband had been continually violating the protective order issued by a state Superior Court judge in 2013.

A subsequent search of Rob Morrison’s cell phone records indicated that over the course of the Memorial Day weekend, he placed 121 calls to Ashley’s cell phone and home phone. Most of the calls were made on May 25 when he allegedly called 109 times and “would hang up and call right back for approximately 14 hours,” police said.

Ashley Morrison told Darien police Sgt. Keri Isaac she was scared and “she thinks Rob Morrison could kill her if she has him arrested.” She said Rob Morrison told her that “she will never get rid of him” and she had fled to a friend’s house with her son because she was afraid that he would show up at her home.

When Ashley Morrison was later informed that Darien police were pursuing her husband’s arrest following an investigation, she allegedly “became irate” and told Isaac “things are fine and she does not want to pursue any charges.”

Darien police responded to two other domestic incidents at the couple’s Hollow Tree Ridge Road home in 2013 and Rob Morrison was arrested in a Feb. 17, 2013 incident. In that incident, Morrison allegedly got into an argument with his wife over photos posted on Facebook and ultimately choked her with both hands.

According to the arresting officer at the time, Morrison “threatened that if he was released from police custody, he would kill his wife, ” a handwritten note in his court file said.

When the charges were dropped in April, Morrison appeared contrite and apologized for his behavior the night of his arrest.

Outside the courtroom, Morrison said, “I am obviously very happy this day has finally come. In the 14 months since this happened, I have experienced an amazing amount of personal growth. For something that started out quite negatively, it transformed into something quite positive.”

It's a Match Made in News Heaven

20 years ago, OJ Simpson's houseguest Kato Kaelin was a household name and the butt of many late night talk show hosts jokes.

Kaelin is now 55 years old (really?! God that makes us feel old) and is dating an LA newswoman.

According to RumorFix, Kaelin is dating KCAL anchor Leyna Nguyen.

The two have been gushing about each other all over social media.

Nguyen writes:”Thank you Kato, for turning this cynical hard-head into a ball of mush.” And later she tweeted, “thank u @Kato_Kaelin for the love & laughter.”

Kaelin shoots back on Instagram: “You make me smile : Ur my EVERYTHING @leynanguyennews - the laughs, the love. If this is a dream, DONT pinch me. #love.”

Ummmmm....I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

The Intern Did It

FTVLive FIRST told you that WTEV/WAWS in Jacksonville posted the wrong picture in a story about a man that was arrested for holding 3 women as sex slaves.

The guys name was Timothy Deegan, but when Action News Jacksonville posted the picture of Deegan on their website, they used a photo of Tim Deegan the Weather Anchor at competing WTLV.

After FTVLive's story was posted, WTEV News Director took to Twitter yesterday to kind of apologize and blamed the mistake on the company that oversees the station's website.

Here's Longo's passing the buck tweet:

Robin Meade Beats CNN's New Day

When Jeff Zucker took over CNN and said that he was going to retool the failing morning show, FTVLive gave him some advice.

We told Zucker that he should move HLN Anchor Robin Meade over to CNN and he will have no problem increasing the morning ratings at the big sister network.

Zucker ditched our idea and spent millions reworking the morning show and promoting it.

Meade still anchors Morning Express and does it with a much smaller budget and almost no promotion to speak of.

Yet, if you look at the numbers from Monday, Meade's show beats CNN's New Day in both Total Viewers and the demos.

HLN's Morning Express pulled in 286,000 total viewers to CNN's 261,000. In the demo, Meade pulled 124,000 to New Day's tiny 49,000 viewers.

We hate to tell Jeff Zucker that we were right.....ahhhh hell....who are we kidding? We LOVE saying that.

WeatherNation Expands

WeatherNation is expanding and making some big changes to their operation.

WeatherNation got their big break last year when The Weather Channel tried to bully DirecTV into paying them more retransmission fees.

The Weather Channel fell off of DirecTV and was replaced by WeatherNation. TWC finally gave in and went crawling back to DirecTV, but WeatherNation kept the momentum going, by signing a deal with the satellite provider to stay on the bird.

Now FTVLive has learned of a number of things happening at WeatherNation.

First off, sources tell FTVLive that WeatherNation is hiring seven Meteorologists for their Denver office and they are adding another studio called the SkyDeck. They plan to use this for a morning show, taking on Sam Champion and AMHQ at TWC.

Sources also tell FTVLive that WN plans to relocate all talent from Minneapolis to Denver.

They are launching on all consoles such as Playstation, Xbox, and others. It will be integrated with local affiliate branding, including their local headlines.

WeatherNation just started streaming in Puerto Rico on DirectTV.

And lastly, FTVLive hears that WeatherNation is in the works of signing a deal for another 15 million homes with an unidentified cable company.

NBC Nightly Expands Ratings Lead

Last week was a good one for NBC News and Anchor Brian Williams.

Deadline writes that NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams clocked its biggest overall audience in six weeks and its biggest advantage over ABC World News With Diane Sawyer in more than three months.

Williams’ newscast (8.44 million) topped Sawyer’s (7.27 million)and CBS’ Scott Pelley-anchored newscast (6.05 million) last week.  In the demo, Williams (2.005 million) also outperformed Sawyer (1.902 million) and CBS (1.371 million).

That said,  all three newscasts were up in overall audience, but only ABC’s was up in the news demo, compared to same week last year.
