Longtime Austin Anchor Signing Off

Longtime KVUE Anchor Jim Bergamo will retire from the TV news business next week, wrapping up a 36-year broadcast career.

His final day on the air will be Aug. 21. The following week, he’ll start a new job with the Pulte Group, working as a sales consultant in Georgetown’s Sun City development.

“I’m eagerly looking forward to the next chapter,” Bergamo said. “I’m very happy with what I’ve been able to do over the years and I’m very blessed to have KVUE be the last stop in my run.”

One of his quotes about leaving TV news says a lot about the business now-a-days.

“But a lot of businesses are changing – not just broadcast news – and I feel like this is no longer a business for a guy like me. I feel like it’s time to go in a different direction.”

Amen Brother!

Bounced O-Town News Director to Resurface in Cincy

Back in January, FTVLive told you that Tim Geraghty is out as News Director at News 13 in Orlando.

Well, it appears that Geraghty is finally off the beach and headed back to work.

He took to Facebook to say that he is headed to Sinclair's (ouch!) station in Cincinnati.

Here is what he posted to FB:

"I know some of you have already heard, but for those who have not: I have accepted a position as News Director for WKRC in Cincinnati, Sinclair's CBS affiliate in the Queen City. I start there this coming Monday, August 17th. I appreciate those of you who gave me some incredible advice and counsel - and business! - as I worked to start up Media & More. This move reunites me with some good friends in the broadcasting business and near family."

CBS Names New GM in the Twin Cities

Ann Ouellette has been named Vice President and General Manager of WCCO, the CBS-owned station in Minneapolis-St. Paul, it was announced by Peter Dunn, President, CBS Television Stations.

Ouellette has served as WCCO’s controller since June 2003. She has been serving as interim general manager of the station since April of this year, when Brien Kennedy moved from the Twin Cities to become President and General Manager of KYW-TV and WPSG-TV, the CBS-owned duopoly in Philadelphia.

“Ann is a terrific leader and talented executive with nearly 25 years of experience in local broadcasting,” Dunn said. “During her 12 years as a member of the senior management team at WCCO, she has played a key role in upholding CCO’s great legacy and making it one of the best television stations in the country. We are thrilled that we are able to promote from within to fill this key position and look forward to having Ann and her colleagues lead WCCO to even greater success in the future.”

“I am grateful to Peter and CBS for giving me this tremendous opportunity to lead the wonderfully talented and experienced team here at WCCO,” Ouellette said. “This is a very special place in the world of local broadcasting, where we all take great pride in how we serve our community. I look forward to working hard to make sure that we continue to shine.”

Jimmy Fallon to Stay on at NBC through 2021

NBC might have been quick to give Jay Leno the boot, but it looks like Jimmy Fallon is staying around at least through the decade.

Fallon has renewed his deal with NBC Entertainment, extending it six years and signing on through September 2021.

NBC says that since Fallon took over as host in February 2014, “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” has dominated the late-night landscape versus all timeslot competition, winning in total viewers, the 18-49 demo and all other key ratings categories.

“Jimmy has been an important member of the NBCUniversal family for 17 years. He is extraordinarily talented, hard-working and brings a level of creativity and energy every single day that is simply unmatched in television,” said Steve Burke, Chief Executive Office, NBCUniversal. “The success of the ‘Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ has been nothing short of remarkable. We couldn’t be prouder of the show he and his team put on every night and couldn’t be happier that he will remain with us at 30 Rock at least through 2021.”

Somewhere Conan O'Brien is seething.

Cops Arrest Suspect in Camera Thefts of Bay Area TV Crews

Back on July 2nd, FTVLive told you KNTV (San Francisco) news crew was attacked and robbed of their gear.

The brazen attack occurred at Pier 14 in San Francisco, where the reporter and photographer were covering a story about a woman who had been shot to death there the night before. A crew from KTVU was also robbed at the same scene.

Now, police have arrested a known gang member with an extensive criminal in the brazen robbery of the two news crews.

San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr said Michael A. Jones was taken into custody in after a tussle with arresting officers outside a Motel 6 in Fremont following an intense investigation and manhunt by his department. Two other suspects remain at large.

“Inspectors from the SFPD were able to find the suspect vehicle and knew the driver was Michael Jones… (He was) known to them as an affiliate with a local gang here in San Francisco,” Suhr told KTVU.

Suhr said the gang was “known to be engaged in robberies, auto burglaries and other crime in San Francisco.

An undercover surveillance was set up of Jones and probable cause was developed leading to his arrest.

Jones, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges stemming from the news crew attack, was set to make a court appearance Wednesday to set the date for a preliminary hearing.

Jones has been charged with robbery, aggravated assault, grand theft and conspiracy.

More arrests were expected in the news crew attack.

“We do have leads on the other two suspects,” Suhr told KTVU. “We are very hopeful that we will get them in custody.”

While some stolen items were recovered, Suhr said, the stolen cameras had not been recovered.

Reno Anchor to Face Stalker in Court

KTVN (Reno) Anchor Kristen Remington has a date with her stalker Today,

The trial of a man that is accused of stalking Remington is set to kick off Today in a Reno courtroom.

The man started by writing a emails to the Anchor, then he showed up at the station.  “My producer said, ‘There’s someone here to see you.’ I searched his name in my email to see if I knew the guy.”

The letter talked about a future and a family with Remington. He talked about falling in love with her.

The station called police and the man was arrested. Charged with stalking and willful/malicious conduct to cause a reasonable person to feel terrorized, he pleaded not guilty.

Remington has a restraining order against the man, his criminal trial starts Today.

Since the incident, Remington wondered if she should leave the career she loves? She says that she has changed her life because she is scared.

She talks about her children less. She took family pictures off her work Facebook page.

She and other women at the station don’t leave the building alone.

She is training with a former Navy Seal who is teaching her close quarters defense tactics, training with a black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu and carefully listening to advice from a police detective with decades of experience in the stalking unit.

The training has been intense.

“After the Navy Seal teaches you a few things, he puts a hood on your head in a relatively dark room, (then) pulls the hood off and you must quickly evaluate the situation and react.”

She has been choked, faced attackers with weapons and even had to react to normal situations like a man genuinely just asking for directions to a gas station.

“I almost took him down, too,” she said.

She said she doesn’t want to live in fear but is much more aware.

“If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, listen to your gut.”

Philly Station Cancels Mayoral Debate After Diva Demands

WCAU had a planned debate between Democratic mayoral candidate Jim Kenney (pictured) and Republican Melissa Murray Bailey, but ended up canceling it after one of the candidates made “unreasonable demands”.

The Kenney campaign acted like he was a rock star had submitted a six-page “memorandum of understanding”  that would have made Justin Bieber proud.

The document had 60 prerequisites for the debate, dictating everything from camerawork, the number and size of dressing rooms each campaign would be assigned, and how many bottles of water each candidate would receive (two, for the record).

The Kenney campaign said that the document was intended to keep focus on “the issues” and that other television stations had agreed to the requirements. Both campaigns had signed off on the agreement.

WCAU station managers notified both campaigns that, in their view, the demands were excessive, citing a specific restriction on camerawork at the debate — that there would be no “cut-aways” to reactions of a candidate while an opposing candidate was answering a question.

After two weeks of fruitless negotiations, Williams, in an email, told both campaigns that the station would be withdrawing “due to demands of the Kenney Campaign.”

“We gave NBC10 the better part of two weeks to come up for some alternatives,” Hitt said of the camera angle demands. “Another TV station that has higher ratings than NBC10 had no problem with our [memorandum].”

She said the campaign also discussed the MOU’s demands with other television executives and none of them saw it as a deal breaker.

“NBC10 never had a real excuse other than it made for more interesting TV,” Hitt said.

Chicago Anchor Chokes Up During Story

WGN (Chicago) did a story was about an Alabama man that rescued a baby from a car. Although Anchor Dina Bair was not reading the story, it didn't stop her from getting a bit emotional.

MAN RESCUES BABY FROM CARDina Bair got a little emotional over a story in tonight's evening news. Maybe you will find it equally moving.

Getting Out of Traffic

Screen Shot 2015-08-13 at 5.44.02 AM.png

KENS (San Antonio) comedic traffic anchor is no longer going to play in traffic.

After a little less than a year of giving road advice to S.A. drivers, Jennie Stencel says she is done. She cites the early morning schedule and lack of sleep as the reason she is packing up and leaving the station and Texas altogether.

Stencel said she’s on her way back to North Carolina to reunite with her husband and children.

Courtroom Artist says she's Sorry for Tom Brady Sketch

Artist Jane Rosenberg was hired by a number of media companies to help cover a hearing involving New England Patriots Tom Brady in federal court.

Here is her drawing of Brady in Court (try not to laugh):

It didn't take long for the Internet to weigh in on Rosenberg's work:

Rosenberg told the NY Times that she was sorry. “I’m getting bad criticism that I made him look like Lurch,” she said, referring to the Addams Family character. “And obviously I apologize to Tom Brady for not making him as good-looking as he is.”

Ann Curry to Pen Book

We doubt Matt Lauer will be excited to read it, but Ann Curry is said to be writing a book.

The fired Today Show Anchor left NBC back in January and a source tells Page Six that Curry had been “unhappy for a long time because she’s basically doing nothing, while NBC is unhappy that she has been paid a lot of money to do nothing.” Her salary following the fallout was reportedly up to $12 million a year.

NBC News said that she was moving on to develop her own media startup backed by NBCUniversal, which would allow her to produce content for a number of platforms, including for them.

No word on what Curry’s book will be about, but we’re told her nondisclosure agreement with NBC doesn’t prevent her from talking about her feelings about events that have already been in the news.

How many chapters could Lauer take up in the book?

Just asking....

Sanjay Gupta: I'm Liberal, but not as Much as the Rest of the People at CNN

When it comes to cable news, Fox News is thought to be on the hard right, MSNBC on the hard left and CNN would like you to believe they are right down the middle.

In an interview with Playboy Magazine, Dr. Sanjay Gupta admits that he's a liberal, but not as much as his co-workers at CNN.

Playboy: You worked as a White House fellow in the office of first lady Hillary Clinton. Does that tell us everything we need to know about your politics?

Gupta: I’m a pretty liberal guy. Being journalists, we work our whole careers predicated on freedom of speech. I value humanitarian causes that are liberal, so I probably lean more liberal, though not as liberal as all my colleagues within CNN.

More ammo for the Conservatives to attack CNN with.

Uh Oh! Cord Cutting Accelerates

FTVLive cut the cable cord 4 months ago and a number of other people are doing the same thing.

Last quarter, the pay TV industry lost 566,000 subscribers, making it the worst second quarter net loss in history for the nation's pay TV industry.

Those losses come on the heels of a 321,000 subscriber net loss the quarter before. In other words pay TV has lost almost a million subscribers in the past 6 months.

Viewers are sick of being forced to pay for countless channels they don't watch and paying higher prices as networks and station groups demand higher retransmission fees.

It appears the TV industry may have cooked the golden goose.
