Buffalo Reporter Headed to Denver

WKBW Reporter Jason Gruenauer is shuffling off from Buffalo and headed to Denver.

Gruenauer, who joined WKBW fresh out of college, heads to KMGH in Denver. Both stations are owned by E.W. Scripps.

Gruenauer will be working on a news magazine show program called “The Now.“

It used to be unheard of for someone on their second job of of school to land in a Top 20 market, but as they say the times are changing.

Chattanooga Station: We will Not Cover Protestors

There are reports that the idiots from Westboro church are looking to come to Chattanooga and demonstrate at the funerals of the Marines and sailor that were killed in the base shooting.

WRCB's News Director Derrall Stalvey took to Facebook to tell viewers that his station would not be covering these people.

"We will not help them spread their message of hate," Stalvey wrote.

Here is his entire post he made to Facebook:

EDITORIAL NOTE: We have heard reports about the Kansas group that may send members to Chattanooga to protest the slain service members. WRCB will not be manipulated into coverage by a group that tries to take of advantage of situations like this. We will not help them spread their message of hate. We make coverage decisions each day on what to cover and not cover. We will not be covering their protests unless it evolves into other issues that might make it newsworthy. If we do choose to cover any issues of public concern, we will do so without showing the picketers, signage, or their messages of hate. Our coverage has, and will continue to, focus on the fallen servicemen as well as the others who were affected. (Derrall Stalvey/WRCB News Director)

Denver Station Holds Breath on Pots Ads

On Friday, FTVLive told you that KMGH (Denver) was planning on airing first advertisement for a legal marijuana company.

But, now it appears that KMGH has put the airing of the ad on hold for the moment. It looks like the lawyers are involved.

KMGH's owner  E.W. Scripps has its lawyers looking into it before the ad hits the air.

The station is weighing one 15-second spot for  The Green Solution, a company with several dispensaries in the state, and another for  Neos, a company that sells cannabis-oil-loaded vape pens.

The first spot shows real people, not actors, in familiar Denver locations holding signs reading, "I'm a construction worker," "I'm a purchasing manager," "I shop at The Green Solution."

The second pitch says, "Neos. Recreate responsibly," over images of Larimer Square, a concert, healthy young people dancing and hiking. A printed graphic cautions "must be 21 or older to consume. Colorado only."

The spots don't show or mention cannabis and would air after the late news, leading in to "Jimmy Kimmel Live."

But how will Channel 7 justify using the federally licensed airwaves to carry ads for a substance still illegal at the national level?

"In the old days, Mary Tyler Moore and Dick Van Dyke slept in separate beds. Now we have Viagra ads. Things evolve," KMGH vice president and general manager Brad Remington said.

Remington cited strict guidelines on the content and timing of the ads. "Ads for recreational use, for example, cannot air until after 10 p.m. and cannot show people using the product." The ads would air when the vast majority of the audience is over 21, he said, citing Nielsen data.

"I don't mind being first," he said. "We're being really smart about it."

So far, no other Denver TV station has agreed to carry cannabis-related advertising.

Mark Cornetta, head of KUSA-Channel 9, said the station has no such plans. "That's not to say if the federal government decides to legalize marijuana. ... We've talked about it a number of times. We're licensed by the federal government. ... What sort of conflicts might that hold?

"We've all been approached," Cornetta said. "It's a dilemma."

Holy Shit!

Network A was covering the JBay Open Surf Championship, when pro surfer and 3x world champ Mick Fanning got attacked by a great white shark live on camera.

"Holy shit" says one of the commentators and Fanning went under water.

The cameras quickly pulled to a wide shot when they figured out what was going on. Somehow Fanning walked away with just a bit leash.

But it was some wild TV for a bit.

Let's go to the video:

Pro surfer and 3x world champ Mick Fanning fought off a great white shark during the #JBayOpen final and somehow walked away with just a bit leash. Thankfully he is OK, competition has been suspended and this is certainly one of the craziest scenes to play out during a LIVE sports broadcast. Get more from the World Surf League on this scary event.

Aren't You The Weather Channel?

There was a Tornado Warning in parts of Pennsylvania this weekend.

Viewers that tuned into The Weather Channel hoping to get some information that might help saved their life, was greeted by Fat Guys in the Woods.

The Weather Channel never left programing despite the fact that conditions were severe.

“If you have ever been in a severe weather decision and you need to make a decision to protect your family, you need to get your information from a trusted source,” said Weather Channel president David Clark to the Washington Post in January 2014.

He should have added, "except when Fat Guys in the Woods is on, then you're on your own."

Milwaukee Anchor Leaving TV to Work for God

WTMJ Reporter and weekend news anchor Tom Murray is leaving the station to work for Oak Creek Assemble of God Church.

Murray told viewers in a Facebook post that God and the Holy Spirit started leading him to this direction two years ago.

Here is what he wrote on Facebook:

A big announcement today for our family. My 8+ years at TODAY'S TMJ4 will come to an end in a few weeks. I am excited to join the Oak Creek Assemble of God ministry staff at the end of August. In 2005, I came to understand what Christ did for me (Romans 10:9-10) and it's been quite a journey ever since. Through prayer and the Holy Spirit, God started leading me in this direction about two years ago. This may come as surprise for many of my longtime friends (especially if we went to college together). I am thankful God uses imperfect people. Jennifer and I are looking forward to this next adventure!

Buffalo Broadcast Legend Passes Away

Van Miller, the longtime WIVB Sports Director and voice of the Buffalo Bills passed away on Friday.

Miller  the most versatile play-by-play man in Buffalo sports history, delivering memorable calls that became part of Western New York’s sports lore, died at age 87.

On a personal note, Miller was a friend of my Mom and Dad and I grew up listening to his voice on the radio calling sports (we used to listen to sports on the radio back in the day). I also went to school with Miller's son, who was also named Van.

Miller is a member of six Halls of Fame and has his name on the Bills’ Wall of Fame and a seating area at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

In 2004, he became the first local play-by-play man to receive the Pete Rozelle Award from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, “for exceptional longtime contributions to radio and television in professional football.”

Miller is on the list of some of the biggest names in broadcasting who have won that award, including John Madden, Roone Arledge, Curt Gowdy, Pat Summerall, Jack Buck, Charlie Jones, Ray Scott, Dick Enberg, Chris Berman, Don Criqui and Jim Nantz.

Calling an Asshole an Asshole

NPR's Standards and Practices Editor Mark Memmott posted a public memo telling the staff to use the same standards for offensive language on podcasts that they would over the air.

The guidance was in response to a question from journalists in NPR’s New York bureau, who asked whether it was OK to “call an asshole an asshole.”

The answer was no.

Luckily, FTVLive does not have such a rule and will will continue to call assholes, "Assholes."

Sorry Howard and Brian.

Here is the NPR memo on the subject.

Ummmm...We Saw that Already

Not sure why, but for some reason Nexstar owned WTWO in Terre Haute rand NBC Nightly News back to back on Saturday night.

We not even sure if the station knows they did it?

A number of people took to social media asking what's up with the back to back episodes of the exact same newscast?

The station did not answer them back. Assholes (see we told you we have no rule against using the word).

That's My Brother

Gay Star News says that this past weekend was an historic one.

The site says that Thomas Roberts became the first openly gay anchor of an evening newscast on a major US TV network on Saturday night when he hosted NBC’s Nightly News.

Roberts, 42, tweeted that it was ‘quite a big honor.’

His sister, Patsy was also happy to see her bro in the big chair:

There are a few openly gay evening news anchors on cable TV – notably MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon – but Roberts is the first for one of the big three networks.

Lester Holt Missing Today Show, will Stay on Dateline

Lester Holt has taken the big chair at NBC Nightly News, but he is still a bit homesick for the Today Show.

He also plans on sticking around Dateline, at least for a while longer.

While talking to the Detroit Free Press, holt talked about his fondness for Today:

"'Dateline' is still part of my job portfolio for the time being. I enjoy doing that. ... I do miss the 'Today' show a little bit because the 'Today' show allows you to kind of lay it all out there, your entire personality. 'Today' show viewers know your dog's name, your kid's name, what music you like, what your pet peeves are. Nightly news, we don't get that opportunity."
