Best Commencement Advice For Journalists

If you spend any time at all on Twitter, you've probably seen Gary VoSot. Here at FTVLive World Headquarters, we love reading Gary's tweets because, well, we love sarcasm and brutal honesty.

While college graduates are sitting through speeches by Brokaw, Couric, Cooper, and the traditional, blah blah blah, Vosot tells it like it is:

H/T to the folks at College Media Matters for putting them all together.

ND OUT In Philly

KYW-TV news director Susan Schiller is leaving the station. She's been the ND there for 14 years; 40 years at CBS.

FTVLive told you on April 2nd, that bets were being taken on the future of Schiller after Brien Kennedy was named the new GM. Well, it didn't take very long.  Here's the memo from Schiller:

I would like to share with you a decision I have made concerning this time in my life and career.  With my daughter graduating college and my son close to wrapping up his service in the military, my husband and  I find ourselves at a crossroads. This seems like the best opportunity I may have to explore other options in both my professional and personal lives.  For that reason, this morning I informed Brien that I would be leaving the station next month.  It’s time to take a break and look forward to the future and other opportunities in my career.   I have agreed to stay on and help through the transition which will give me the opportunity to thank each of you personally for your commitment and friendship.

Over the past few weeks, I have been spending time with Brien talking about the Philadelphia market.  I leave with the confidence that he has a deep commitment to the future success of our news organization.

I could not be more proud to have worked with each and every one of you on some of the most important and compelling stories of my career.  Certainly this week’s outstanding news coverage of the Amtrak tragedy  is typical of the  level of journalism that I have been honored to lead at the station.  I’ll be in Boston early next week for graduation ceremonies, but hope to talk to each of you when I get back on Wednesday.

Susan

So now the big question, who takes over? Does anyone want to open bets on Mike Caputa from WCCO? Crank up the rumor mill.

Top "Mouse" Cashes In A Lot Of Cheese

When your stock rises 70-percent, it's probably a good time to take advantage. Disney/ABC CEO Bob Iger did just that, to the tune of $21.7 million. That's 200,000 shares, worth.

Iger also gifted more than 90,000 shares to an unknown beneficiary. All that being done, Iger still owns 1.1 million shares of Disney worth about $120 million.

That's a lot of commercials and 'Fast Passes'.

Anderson Cooper Pimping Entertainment

Here at FTVLive WorldHQ, the Boss and I always appreciated that Anderson Cooper took a stand against 'selfies' at murders, train wrecks, or any other horrible story. But it appears Coop can't stand against Jeff Zucker, who paraded him in front of the audience at the annual Turner upfront.

"Today, CNN is about breaking news; it's about big events and investigative journalism. But we're also about original series, documentaries and feature-length films that have broadened our audience", said Cooper.

Then he said, "CNN has more hours of live news programming today than at any other point in our entire history." Wait, WHAT? Did Brian Williams write that script? I'll bet Ted Turner would have something to say about that.

Here's some free advice to the folks in the executive boadrooms of media companies: Keep your news people in the newsroom, and leave the 'entertainment' to Don Lemon.

On the Road Again....

After this morning's update, I am on the road to South Florida.

This is the busy time of year in the tournament golf schedule and I am playing in an event in Boca Raton this weekend.

It's 36 holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday.

On the course, I'm known as Surly Golfer© and with 54 holes in just two days it is a good bet will be much more Surly these next few days.

The FTVLive Intern will be taking you into the weekend and we hope that it is a good one for you.

We'll see you right back here first thing Monday morning, Tiger Woods permitting of course.

Stephanopoulos Backs Out of Debate

ABC News Anchor George Stephanopoulos says he's sorry for not telling his bosses that he gave , $75,000 in donations to the Clinton Foundation.

When the story first broke, Stephanopoulos said he had donated a total of $50,000 to the foundation. But, later in the day, he said he'd forgotten about a third donation of $25,000, bringing the total to $75,000.

I just hope that someday, I make enough money that I can just forget about giving away $25 grand.

Stephanopoulos was slated to moderate a Republican presidential primary debate early next year. He has now said that he will NOT be doing that.

"I don't want to be a distraction," he said.

Ummmmm....it's a little late for that George.

Oh No You didn't? Oh Yes You Did!

As long as social media is around, we're fairly certain that FTVLive will never run out of material.

Although, to be honest, it would be nice to live in a world where Journalists think before hitting the send button.

You know, like WRDW (Augusta) Anchor Laura Warren, who fired up her Periscope app and posted this:

I love how the hearts and the train crash compliment each other. Plus, let's use the train crash to turn this into a contest.

Shaking my head.

Big Apple Station Blurs Picasso Nipple

WNYW Fox 5 (New York) took censoring the news to a whole new level when the station blurred the nipples of the women in Picasso masterpiece “The Women of Algiers.”

The painting set a record when it sold $179 million at auction.

After the Fox 5 team took the blur brush to the Picasso, not everyone was happy about it:

Yesterday morning, Fox 5 Morning show, showed the painting again and this time it was it was without the blurred nipples.

Anchor Greg Kelly said, “The 10 o’clock news, some of the producers are cuckoo . . . The nipple, they thought it was too much, kids might get the wrong idea at home . . . We get it! It was ridiculous!”

Yes it was Greg, yes it was.

Out the Door in Charlotte

WBTV Reporter Astrid Martínez is no longer with the station, but no one wants to say why that is?

Martínez has been with WBTV since July of 2012, but now is gone.

WBTV News Director Dennis Milligan is hiding behind the old "its a personnel matter" excuse. Looking at her social media, Martinez seems to be on vacation in Bali and hasn't said anything about being bounced.

Earlier this month, Martinez covered a story about a teen who shot a policeman and her report included a shot of the youth’s Facebook page that showed anti-police posts and an expletive that “slipped through” and made it on the air.

Did that get her sacked?

Who knows? Because the station isn't talking.

Martinez is the former Miss Colombia USA 2000.

Anchor By Day, Pastor by Night

During the day, KOB (Albuquerque) Morning Anchor Steve Stucker answers to his News Director.

But after his work in the newsroom, Stucker answers to a much bigger boss.

God (although, let's be honest, many News Directors think they are God).

Stucker is an associate pastor at New Covenant Church.

Longtime viewers weren't surprised, as Steve has talked openly about his faith for years. "Take some time to really enjoy your life today" are the words regular viewers have come to expect at the end of every morning newscast, along with, "and may God bless."

The signoff began in 1997, when Steve was inspired after the death of comedian Red Skelton, who always ended his shows in a similar way: "May God bless and good night."

The words mean a lot to Steve personally. When he was in his 30s, he renewed his Christian faith. Steve has been very open about that with viewers, and biblical passages make regular appearances on his Facebook page.

"He came to me probably 18 years ago and told me he'd like to train to become a pastor and as I looked at his life, I realized he was already doing the work," Senior Pastor David Row said.

Row says Steve was always serving: delivering mattresses, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army and visiting people in the hospital. About three years ago, Steve made it official and became an associate pastor. He leads bible studies and counsels men's groups.

Steve isn't a celebrity at New Covenant. But they do appreciate that he spreads the message by letting his faith show on TV.

Row says that's just Steve being Steve.

"I think any message that a person broadcasts should be genuine, and with him you detect that it's a natural part of who he is," he said.

Man Fined for Yelling FHRITP

Two days ago, FTVLive told you that one guy lost his job after he thought saying "FHRITP" was "fucking hilarious."

Now, word comes that police in Calgary have fined a man for yelling the phrase out his car window at a CBC Reporter.

The reporter was interviewing a man during the Calgary Flames' playoff run last month about the rash of people yelling the vulgar phrase, "f--- her right in the pussy" when someone in a passing truck allegedly yelled it at them.

Police were able to identify the truck and a ticket was issued.

The fine was $402 for "stunting."

The Replacements

Back in January, FTVLive told you that Canadian News Anchor Leslie Roberts has been "resigned" from the network after an investigation found he is secretly the part owner of a public relations firm whose clients — lawyers, small businesses and others — appear on his show.

Well, 5 months later and the network has finally named his replacements.

Global News says they are making major changes to all of its Toronto newscasts, including new anchors and a new name for its flagship newscast.

Veteran politics reporter Alan Carter and former CP24 anchor Farah Nasser will team as co-anchors of the rebranded Global News at 5:30 and 6 (formerly known as The News Hour).

The network says the changes mark the “redefining” of Global’s Toronto newscasts as the station moves to a new format, heavily reliant on virtual sets and 3-D graphics.

“We’re thrilled to welcome strong new talent to our winning team of committed journalists,” Ward Smith, Global News’ Director, Eastern Stations and Station Manager for Global Toronto,

Big Easy Anchor is Seattle Bound

Sources tell FTVLive that WDSU Anchor Sula Kim is leaving the Big Easy and headed for Seattle.

Kim joined the station two years ago, coming from WVEC in Norfolk.

Word is she is headed to KING in Seattle.

She was anchoring the 4PM newscast at WDSU, no word yet on what show she will be doing in Seattle.

The move is no official yet, so don't tell anyone....OK?

When it is official, you can expect to see the story on the other TV websites.

Stay tuned....
