Phoenix Photographer Loses Cancer Battle

After a two-year battle with cancer, News Photojournalist Rick Ramírez passed away on Tuesday night.

Ramírez was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2013. According to his friend and colleague Mekahlo Medina, he seemed to be improving after treatment, but suffered a relapse last month.

“Rick was such a selfless person,” says Mekahlo, who worked with him at KPNX. “He cared so deeply about everyone else even until the end, when he told his parents to take care of his brothers and friends.”

Ramírez was a Photog for KNXV  in Phoenix for the past 9 years. Before that, he worked at KPNX from 2001-2005.

Throughout the years, Rick mentored several NAHJ students, and according to Mekahlo, “continued that mentorship throughout their careers.”

CBS Reporter Sues Network Bosses for Sexual Harassment

CBS Reporter Ken Lombardi claims that two of his bosses drunkenly groped him during boozy encounters and network didn't do anything about it.

Now he's suing.

Lombardi charges in documents filed in Manhattan Federal Court that at a December 2013 CBS News holiday party, Duane Tollison, a senior producer, grabbed Lombardi’s crotch and kissed his neck.

“I wanted to apologize if anything I did offended you or crossed a line. I like to get a little crazy. If you weren’t offended, then let’s do it again. LOL How is your day so far? :)” Tollison wrote the next day, according to the suit, which also names CBS as a defendant.

During a separate encounter this past May 8, Lombardi says he sought professional advice from “CBS Evening News” director Albert (Chip) Colley.

But instead of a review of Lombardi’s celeb interviews, Colley allegedly got wasted at Hell’s Kitchen bar Hardware and hit on the red-carpet reporter.

Lombardi charges that the news honcho — who has since left the company — texted him links to porn sites, rubbed his leg and kissed him. Colley also gave Lombardi a hard time for his sexuality, documents charge.

“Colley told (Lombardi) that he did not really believe being bisexual was real and told plaintiff that he was actually completely gay,” documents read.

Lombardi says that the newsroom bigwig hounded him for another date.

“He would show up in my office. I’d catch him following me in the hallway, exhibiting predatory behavior,” Lombardi said.

Since the encounter, Lombardi said he has developed signs of posttraumatic stress disorder and has frequent nightmares and panic attacks.

Efforts to report the harassment were not taken seriously by human resources and were instead met with retaliation, he says.

Lombardi singles out Paula Cohen, manager of the CBS News entertainment department, for allegedly tormenting him after his internal complaint went nowhere.

“You know you’re really pissed me off!” Cohen, who is also named in the suit, allegedly yelled at Lombardi.

CBS's Lara Logan Back Home Recovering

Speaking of CBS News.....

Page Six reports that 60 Minutes Correspondent Lara Logan is back home recovering after being hospitalized with complications from her injuries stemming from a brutal sexual assault in Egypt in 2011.

CBS sources say that Logan, who was hospitalized in March for a second time this year, is resting at home in the DC area, but continuing to work on upcoming stories.

Her friend Ed Butowsky has said, “Very few people know how stoic and incredibly tough this lady is . . . No idea the physical suffering she has been enduring.”

Reporters Finally Back Together in Charlotte

WVEC Investigative Reporter Nick Ochsner is packing up and headed to Charlotte.

Ochsner is landing as the Investigative Reporter at WBTV and we know of at least one person on the WBTV staff that will happy to see him around the station.

WBTV Reporter Sarah-Blake Morgan is married to Ochsner and is happy to be reunited with her husband in the same market.

'We met while working for competing stations in Lubbock, Texas. He moved to Norfolk, I moved to Charlotte. And after two years of long distance, six months of that married, we’re finally going to be in the same place," Morgan tells FTVLive.

She even passed along one of the couples "cheesey" engagement pictures. "Cheesey" was her word not mine, even though it totally is.

Ochsner had been at WVEC since 2013.

Sum Ting Wong Anchor Signing off in San Francisco

KTVU Anchor Tori Campbell told viewers this morning that she is leaving the station.

Campbell leaves the station just short of her 20th year, she will forever be known for maybe the worst blooper in TV news history.

It was Campbell that read the fake pilot names from Asiana flight 214.

Let's watch it one more time, shall we:

Asiana Airlines has confirmed it is taking legal action against the TV station which used false and racist names for four pilots on board the fatal plane crash.

KTVU did not take long to announce her replacement.  Evening Anchor Gasia Mikaelian will be setting the alarm clock much earlier as she moves to mornings.

Campbell tweeted that her last day at the station is June 19th.

NBC's Today Show Beats GMA in Demo (for one day)

It might be grasping at straws a bit, but NBC News is touting the fact that The Today Show beat ABC''s Good Morning America in the prime demo ratings.

Thing is, it was only one day.

An NBC release says, "For the week of March 23, TODAY was the number-one morning show Thursday, topping GMA by a giant 154k in the key demo A25-54. This marked TODAY’s biggest key demo daily win since September 5, 2014.  TODAY also posted growth in total viewers week to week."

Hey....at this point a win is a win I guess.

Fox News Sunday Tops MTP Again in DC

For the third time this month, FOX News Sunday with Chris Wallace beat NBC’s Meet the Press in the political heavy DC market.

FOX News Sunday won on consecutive weeks on March 8th and March 15th as well as on March 29th - three out of the four weeks of Chuck Todd’s 6 month anniversary month as host of Meet the Press.

Additionally, FOX News Sunday is up 4% in total viewers and 11% in the demo vs. same day last year, while Meet the Press is down 21% in the demo.

Somewhere, David Gregory has a big smile on his face.

CBS Names Philly GM

Brien Kennedy

Brien Kennedy

CBS has announced its new leader for their Philadelphia duopoly. They're promoting Brien Kennedy from WCCO.

CBS Television Stations President Peter Dunn made the announcement, calling Kennedy, "an extremely talented and community-oriented broadcast executive".

Kennedy has family on the east coast, so it's a great move for him. He succeeds Jon Hitchcock who 'resigned' to run Tribune's WTIC in Hartford.

Kennedy has an impressive history of running stations: KPNX (Phoenix), WPEC, (West Palm), WXIA (Atlanta), and sales: WUSA (DC), WFMY (Greensboro), Blair Television.

Now bets are being taken as to whether ND Susan Schiller survives the change?

News Director Catches Heat for Tweet then Deletes

When an Indiana Pizza shop said that they would not make pizzas for a gay wedding, social media ramped up with comments against the pizza shop. In fact it got so bad, the pizza shop closed its doors.

One teacher was suspended after tweeting about going to burn the pizza place down:

WBND News Director Aaron Ramey could some heat for his tweet about the teacher's threat to burn down the pizza place. Ramey wrote:

After Twitter started teeing off on Ramey, he deleted his tweet, but it was too late:

Ramey has deleted his tweets dating back to March 22nd and has gone Twitter silent.

Oh social media....you are the gift that keeps on giving.

Female Anchors Deal with Hate Messages over How They Look and Dress

Last week, FTVLive told you about the hate mail that Global (Canada) Weather Anchor Kristi Gordon was getting about the way she dressed on air.

Gordon is pregnant and a number of viewers have hated on her for her on air clothing choice.

One email simply said “Hussy!” and another “BUY some DECENT clothes and have more respect for the unborn child, you’re not the first pregnant woman. OMG.”

Gordon went on air and took on the haters, many of which wrote her anonymously (of course) and since then she has gotten a lot of support.

“It’s been absolutely mind-boggling,” she said. “I’m probably close to about a thousand emails.”

While Gordon said she only seems to get the mean emails when she’s pregnant, many other female news personalities have to deal with these kinds of personal attacks on a regular basis.

“The comments on clothing and hair are part and parcel of the bigger phenomenon of attacking women in general, in an environment that’s anonymous and that leads to the most visceral attacks you can imagine.”

Global Edmonton news anchors Quinn Ohler and Shallima Maharaj have both been victims of hate mail.

Maharaj said she was once told over Twitter that she’s “not a good-looking Hindu.” Someone else took the time to write her former news director about her “unfortunate” nose.

Ohler admitted the biggest complaint she’s gotten lately is over her lip colour.

“I’ve gone out and bought some other colours because of it. It seems so stupid but it did kind of get to me in the sense that ‘can people just get over my damn makeup and listen to what I’m saying! It’s important!’

No matter what you do, someone is bound not to like something about your appearance. But when people link Ohler’s appearance to her journalistic skills, that’s when it really gets under her skin.

“I’ve been told I’m bad at my job because of the way my hair looks,” she said. “Someone once told me my hair stylist should be fired. Ok, that’s me!”

The problem, of course, is not just limited to the media industry. Gordon said she’s received messages from tons of women who related to her situation. One was from a 67-year-old who recently had to return back to the work force, where she was met with ageism.

But, female talent knows all to well, you make your living on TV and the haters are going to hate.

Longtime Phoenix Anchor Leaving the Business

After 31 years, KPNX Anchor Lin Sue Cooney told viewers she is signing off from the station and leaving TV news.

The longtime news anchor, who started at the station in 1984 made the announcement during the 6 p.m. news broadcast Wednesday.

She says she will be joining the executive team at Hospice of the Valley.

"I will miss all the beautiful people I work with here, because they are family to me," Cooney said during the broadcast. "But, I am thrilled to be embracing a new season in my life. So many people have helped me along the way, I am anxious to start giving back and use the gifts God gave me to help others. ...

"The reason I've been able to sit in this chair for the last 31 years is because you supported me, loyally watching this newscast. I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart."

During an interview after the broadcast, Cooney said that she had been considering a move for five or six years, because she wants to spend more time with her two children. "My family, I have to make them my priority," she said. "The clock is ticking."

We will sincerely miss Lin Sue in our newsroom every day," John Misner KPNX GM said in a statement. "She is beloved not only by her co-workers but by Arizonans who invite her into their living room each night. While we know that it's our loss, we appreciate how impactful she will be in her new role."

Any chance she will return to TV news? "I don't doubt it," she said of her decision. "I'm not going to look backwards at all."

And You Thought Your Newsroom was Crowded

People that work in TV news know what it's like to work in a busy newsroom with a lot of people.

But, if you think your newsroom is busy, check out the new offices of Facebook.

How big is it?

2,800 people work in one room!

Facebook unveiled its enormous new office in Silicon Valley, which includes a 9-acre park on the roof.

The new building in Menlo Park, California, measures 430,000 square feet and apparently has the 'largest open floor plan in the world'.

The social network's newest location was revealed by founder Mark Zuckerberg, who posted an aerial view on the building on his public page.

He wrote: 'Our goal was to create the perfect engineering space for our teams to work together.

'We wanted our space to create the same sense of community and connection among our teams that we try to enable with our services across the world.

To do this, we designed the largest open floor plan in the world - a single room that fits thousands of people.'

This is a picture of the park on top of the building.

Kind of makes the Newsplex not so cool anymore.

Just saying...

ABC Says Lewinsky likely not Headed to The View

Yesterday, word dropped that Barbara Walters was looking to hire Monica Lewinsky as the new host of The View.

It would be a hail mary hire and a last gasp to save the show.

But, appears that the ABC suits are brushing off the idea.

Network sources told the NY Daily News that Lewinsky would make an “intriguing” guest host, the chances of her replacing Rosie O’Donnell are “hugely unlikely.”

Lewinsky’s name was added to the list of would-be candidates for the talkfest when an anonymous network source saying Walters suggested Lewinsky could be the show’s silver bullet. The source said the 85-year-old Walters has faith that former President Bill Clinton’s one-time paramour would turn the struggling program into “a runaway success.”

“Barbara believes Monica could make ‘The View’ competitive and compelling, and while a lot of Washington’s elite may scratch the show off their must-visit press list, the younger demographic of online users would tune in daily to see what she had to say,” the source said.

While appearing on the “Late Show with David Letterman” in 2014, Walters was asked if she would consider Lewinsky for the show.

“I think it would be great if she were on ‘The View,’” Walters told Letterman. “I wouldn’t expect it tomorrow.”

Could tomorrow be now?

Stay tuned....
