Ummmm.... That's Not Right Al

Stunning video of a Canadian couple driving along in their pickup truck, when it suddenly gets hit by a bolt of lightning.

The video was captured on camera.

Today Show Weatherman Al Roker talked about the video and pointed out that the reason the couple inside the truck were not hurt, was because of the truck's tires.

Well, as you learn in 5th grade science class, it's not the tires that keep you safe, it's the frame of the vehicle.

It didn't take long for the twitterverse to call out Mr. Roker.

Roker did step up and admit his mistake. Although he does lose points for blaming his mistake on a long week of travel.

Of course Jim "The American Bald Ego" Cantore would have never made that mistake. And he surely would have never admitted he was wrong.

So, it's all good Al. We still love ya!

If you haven't seen the video, here's a link

Will MSNBC Turn to TJ?

Yesterday, FTVLive told you that MSNBC has pulled the plug “Disrupt with Karen Finney” (yeah I know, I never heard of it either).

Anyway, sources tell FTVLive that MSNBC may look to TJ Homes to fill that open slot of the schedule.

Holmes spent 5 years working at CNN, he left for BET in 2011. He parted ways with BET two years later. Since then Holmes has popped up on both CNN and MSNBC.

ord is MSNBC is this/close to giving him Finney's slot at the cable network.

Kicked to the Curb in the Big Apple (UPDATED)

The changes continue at struggling WPIX in New York.

3 days ago, FTVLive told you that the station was pulling main Anchor Scott Stanford from his role as News Anchor and moving him to Sports. WPIX then brought back former Anchor John Muller from ABC News to co-anchor the station’s 5 and 10 p.m. newscasts, where he will be reunited with Tamsen Fadal.

After shaking up the night, yesterday the station moved to make changes on the morning show. Insiders tell FTVLive that Morning Anchor Marysol Castro is gone from the station. Her bio has been scrubbed from the station's website.

Castro has not even been at the station for a year. She came to WPIX in September of last year after previously working as a weather anchor for CBS’ “The Early Show” and ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Castro's Co-Anchor Dan Mannarino also appears to be out. His bio also scrubbed from the station's website.

Word is that Mannarino was on the air this morning, but this is likely his last day doing the morning newscast.

Stay tuned....

UPDATE: Sources tell FTVLive that Mannarino has not left the station. He is off the morning newscast as Anchor, but will retain a role at the station.

Doing it on the Anchor Desk

As any FTVLive reader knows, when it comes to out favorite News Anchor, HLN's Robin Meade tops our list.

But, rounding out the Top 5 is like a revolving door here at FTVLive. Anchors move in and out of spots 2-5 all the time.

Yesterday, two tweets by Anchors have, for the time being moved them into that coveted spot of our list.

First, KXLY (Spoknae) Chief Meteorologist Kris Crocker sent out a tweet that was near and dear to FTVLive's heart. Anyone that knows us, knows why we liked this tweet:

But, believe it or not, that was not our favorite tweet of the day. That tweet was sent out by WOFL (Orlando) Anchor Sonni Abatta:

Enjoy being on FTVLive's favorite list ladies. It usually doesn't last long. Well....except for Robin Meade.

Management Shake Up in Toledo

A big management shake up has gone down at WNWO in Toledo.

WNWO brought in five employees, all from Fort Wayne’s Granite Broadcasting and they are taking over at WNWO.

Lead anchor Jim Blue will transfer his news director duties over the next 90 days to newcomer Nicole Hahn, currently in the newly created position of assistant news director.  Blue’s new title will be managing editor & lead anchor.  John Nizamis, one of the five employees from Fort Wayne, has been named general manager, replacing Chris Topf.

Nizamis, who has worked in television sales for 30 years, said that in a market of Toledo’s size it is rare to have a lead anchor also serve as news director.

“In a sense, most anchors have that managing editor responsibility,” Nizamis said.  “They’re really leading the charge on what they’re covering.  The news director is much more of a management position because you have to worry about hiring and firing.”

In other changes, Charity Freeman was named general sales manager, replacing Sena Mourad-Friedman.  Freeman served as the local sales manager for Granite, as well as an on-air local program host.  Two other positions have been added, including Jason Ashmawi, promotions manager, and Emma Ashmawi, digital content manager.  Both previously worked for Granite in producing and web content management, respectively.  Granite operates several Fort Wayne stations, including WPTA-21 (ABC), WISE-33 (NBC), Fort Wayne’s CW and MYTV Fort Wayne.

Nizamis realizes WNWO trails far behind in local ratings, but says the new faces are here to deliver more than numbers.

“It would be far too ambitious to say that we want to knock (Channels) 13 or 11 off the throne,” Nizamis said.  “As long as we’re fighting the good fight, we’re going to be in good shape here.  It goes beyond the ratings.  First of all, it is a business.  If we can increase ratings, we have an opportunity to increase revenue.

I’m trying to establish a new morale.  I want them to walk with a new swagger.  We want to be relevant.  This is a good product in a good market.”

Good luck with that.

Dallas Station Finally Dumps Anchor that had Outstanding Warrants

FTVLive FIRST reported all the legal trouble that WFAA Anchor Shon Gables has been in.

Back in 2011, FTVLive reported that a bench warrant was issued for Gables. In May of last year, FTVLive reported that a Dallas area process server taped a copy of the lawsuit against gables to the side of a WFAA live truck.

In October of last year, FTVLive FIRST reported that a Michigan Judge has ordered Gables to pay $250,000 to her ex-husband Peter Klamka.

Those are just some of the stories we reported on the Dallas Anchor's legal trouble. The entire time we reported these stories, Gables continued to anchor the news at WFAA.

Now, it appears that WFAA has finally decided to cut ties with Gables.

Her bio has gone missing from the WFAA station website and Gables posted this message to her Facebook page “Thank you Dallas …. I am grateful for the opportunity.”

It appears that BELO was willing to look the other way while the legal troubles piled up against their anchor, but Gannett did not.

Gannett bought WFAA from BELO and has now sent Gables packing.

Uh-Oh! Somebody is in Trouble

WKBW (Buffalo) General Manager Mike Nurse said that a breakdown in the news department's checks and balances led to the repeated airing of  the word "fuck" in a story on the station's 11 p.m. newscast last night.

The station was reporting about the YouTube video of the racist woman in Cheektowaga that quickly went viral.

"Unfortunately the reporter utilized the incorrect video -- instead of the video without sound as previously directed," wrote Nurse. "It was an unfortunate mistake and the anchors immediately apologized. The story was finished at the last minute due to a tech issue that resulted in a breakdown of established checks and balances. We are addressing internally and with the FCC as necessary."

Anchor Keith Radford quickly apologized for the airing of the expletive.

Nurse confirmed that the reporter who used the incorrect video was Kendra Eaglin. He wouldn't say if she was being disciplined.

"We are reviewing and will handle internally," wrote Nurse.

Former CNN CEO: Zucker's Head Might Be on The Chopping Block

Reese Schonfeld the founding CEO of CNN thinks that CNN President Jeff Zucker's head might already be on the chopping block.

In a post written for the Huffington Post, Schonfeld writes:

CNN's CEO, Jeff Zucker, was appointed by (Time Warner CEO Jeffrey) Bewkes a year and a half ago. His presence has not improved CNN ratings. He was just finishing up as the Executive Producer of the failing Katie Couric show and previously had been ousted as the NBC boss when Comcast acquired the network. All too often, MBAs hire people who previously held important jobs but failed at them. They then of course blame the failure on the guy they hired and Zucker's head may already be on the chopping block.

FTVLive has reported in the past that Time Warner could be looking to sell CNN.

The rumors inside the cable network are heating up that TW is prepping CNN for a sale and has already quietly started looking for buyers.

Many CNN staffers think that the current layoffs that will soon be coming to CNN is to make the bottom line look better to a possible buyer.

While Schonfeld thinks Zucker could be getting the boot, some CNN staffers think Zucker could be getting the network ready to be sold.

Either way, Zucker's future at CNN might not last much longer.

Ax to Swing at CNN Newsource

CNN insiders tell FTVLive that the ax is about to swing at CNN's Newsource.

Newsource is CNN's affiliate service and many affiliates feel that the entire service has gone downhill the past year or so.

From a budget side, sources say that Newsource has been under performing and cuts will be made.

Word is that Newsource currently has 7 managers and at least some of those will be let go in the cuts.

"A Stupid Move"

FTVLive was FIRST to tell you that WTEV/WAWS was going to wipe out their main anchors and start over from scratch.

When FTVLive FIRST broke the story we received a number of emails from TV critics and newspapers asking us about our story.

Since our report, a number of other media outlets have also reported on what is being called a very stupid move by the Cox station.

The local paper in Jacksonville, The Florida Times Union has finally gotten around to the story.

The paper writes that the decision by the station to not renew the contracts of five top anchors is a shocking move that could backfire on the station, says a University of Georgia lecturer with more than three decades of experience in the TV new business.

“This is so unusual I’m a little dumbfounded,” said Michael Castengera, a senior lecturer at the University of Georgia’s Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

He was reacting to the report that WAWS-TV Fox30 and WTEV-TV CBS47, which share news resources as Action News, told anchors Mark Spain, Paige Kelton, Tera Barz, Mike Barz and Lynnsey Gardner that their contracts will not be renewed.

Castengera, who started his TV career in the late 1970s at WJXT TV-4 in Jacksonville and has been a news director, station manager and news consultant, said the “wholesale slaughter” of the people who are “the face of your station” strikes him as “a stupid move.”

“There has to be a strong reason to do something like this, and I frankly don’t think there is a strong enough reason, from a business point of view, much less from a human point of view,” said Castengera, who admitted he felt strongly in part because Gardner is a former student of his. “It is a reflection of poor management judgment ... Even if the viewers don’t like the talent, it’s very, very risky.”

Like Castengera, Mort Crim, a Jacksonville resident who served as an anchor in Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia and Louisville and was the model for Will Ferrell’s character in “Anchorman,” was surprised by the news.

“I have never seen a situation where five anchors were told they were being let go at the same time,” Crim said.

But one person who wasn’t particularly surprised was Julie Watkins, who left Action News, where she had been serving as a meteorologist since 2008, last weekend.

The pressure for ratings improvement had been increasing since Cox Media Group bought Fox30 and CBS47 from Newport Television in December 2012, Watkins said.

“There was not the turnaround they wanted,” Watkins said. “I remember when Cox bought us, someone said, ‘Cox does not own number three stations.’”

Watkins said she is sad for her former colleagues.

“They put their blood, sweat and tears into their work,” she said.

Could ABC Jump to a New Affiliate in Birmingham?

Last week, FTVLive told you that Sinclair is looking at surrendering the licenses for the Albiritton stations in Birmingham, Ala., because they failed to find a buyer for them.

It's part of Sinclair's attempt to win FCC approval for the sale of the rest of the Albitton stations, including WJLA in Washington, DC.

But a source in Birmingham says WVUA which is an unaffiliated station, owned by the University of Alabama, with a full range broadcast signal is watching the Sinclair-Albritton acquisition very closely.

Word is that WVUA will apply to take over as the ABC affiliate in Birmingham once Sinclair surrenders the licenses WBMA/WCFT.

WVUA just completed their new broadcast facility within Bryant Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa and are FULL HD. And considering that their signal is more powerful than WAMB’s they are hoping at ABC might be interested in moving their affiliation over to them.
