Could be Games over for Bob Costas (Update)

Bob Costas might not be back on the air again for NBC's Olympic Games coverage.

As, FTVLive has been telling you, Costas has been battling a nasty eye infection that started in one eye and spread to both.

NBC's Olympic EP Jim Bell sent out this email, indicating that Costas might be done with his on air duties at the games.

Anchor Up and Quits in the Middle of the Book

Rob Hudson, an anchor at WDAZ in Grand Forks isn't waiting for the Feb book to end, he's quitting now.

Hudson has been at the station a little more than a year.

The station manager, Rob Horken, said he received an email from Hudson on Monday that said “effective immediately, I resign from my position as news anchor and producer at WDAZ.”

Horken said he replied that he accepted the resignation.

Asked if Hudson indicated a reason for quitting, Horken said all he got was the notice of the resignation.

The station has started a search for a new replacement.

Signing off in Cleveland

WKYC Anchor Robin Swoboda says she's leaving the station when her three-year contract expires at the end of the month.

Her last day on the air with the Gannett-owned Cleveland station will be Feb. 28.

The departure date was confirmed Tuesday by Swoboda and Brooke Spectorksy, WKYC's president and general manager.

"Her contract is indeed up at the end of February, and there are no plans to extend it," Spectorsky said. "We have talked to her about staying on for a while, but she chose not to. She decided it was time to move on."

Swoboda also described the parting as amicable.

"They asked me about doing others things, but they really didn't have a platform that fit me," Swoboda said from her home in Medina. "I tried to do the straight news-anchor thing, but I just came to the realization that it wasn't a good fit for me. I guess I'm still trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up."

Swoboda jumped from Cleveland Fox affiliate WJW Channel 8 to join NBC affiliate Channel 3 in March 2011. She and reporter Chris Tye were teamed as co-anchors of the 7 p.m. newscast.

"....while I respect the news-gathering process so much, it has been quite wearing on me personally. There has been so much bad news during the past three years: the Anthony Sowell killings, the Chardon shooting, the Newtown tragedy, Ariel Castro, the Jerry Sandusky case. The news was wearing on my soul."

Former LA Anchor lands Radio Gig

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 6.31.22 AM.png

Jillian Barberie, whose stints at KTTV Fox 11 and KTLA Channel 5 were clouded by clashes with colleagues, brash behavior and low ratings, has finally gotten a new gig — on radio.

Barberie will host a new afternoon show on TalkRadio 790 KABC AM where she will be joined by another KABC personality, John Phillips. "Mid-Day LA with Jillian Barberie and John Phillips" will debut Monday and air weekdays from noon to 3 p.m as part of the local station's recently launched lineup.

After an 18-year run on KTTV's "Good Day L.A." where she worked as a weathercaster, lifestyle reporter and co-anchor, Barberie left the station in 2012 after being yanked off the anchor desk.

The LA Times writes that during her time on the station, Barberie clashed with co-anchor Dorothy Lucey, making unflattering comments about her on Howard Stern's radio show and calling her "very Christian and Bible-thumpy." Lucey, who also was let go from the station in 2012, said she was frequently distraught by Barberie's "mean."

Barberie tearfully apologized to Lucey on-air when Lucey was departing.

In other appearances with Stern, Barberie would boast about her outrageous sexual escapades, talking about how many celebrities she had "done" and bragging about engaging in sex games with her then husband using a gun.

Barberie last year joined KTLA and was host of the short-lived "Hollywood Mix" where she interviewed stars and gave away items from her wardrobe. It was pulled after a few months of poor ratings and never returned.

KTLA did not respond to requests for comment.

O-Town Station Looks at Reporter's Future, Not Her Past

ChrisHansen-KristynCaddell.jpg

FTVLive told you a couple of days ago that WFTV in Orlando had hired former NBC Reporter Chris Hansen's mistress, Kristyn Caddel.

Caddell's personal life also made headlines when the National Enquirer in 2011 revealed that she was having an affair with the married  Hansen of "Dateline NBC" and "To Catch a Predator" fame.

In a letter to the National Enquirer last year, Caddell wrote, "Our affair has essentially destroyed my professional career." She complained to RadarOnline last year of a double standard in news because she couldn't find a job while her former lover continued to work. Yet NBC didn't renew his contract last year.

As for WFTV, the station sees potential in Caddell and is interested in her future, not her past.

"Kristyn started with us as a freelance reporter," WFTV General Manager Shawn Bartelt said Tuesday. "The quality of her work was excellent. We hired her full time. She is a very hard-working reporter, digging up local stories that make a difference in our community."

Controversial Cleveland GM Announces Retirement

14080807-mmmain.jpg

WOIO General Manager Bill Applegate just announced that he is retiring from the station at the end of April.

Applegate has risen the ratings and a number of eyebrows while running WOIO. He signed off on then WOIO anchor Sharon Reed getting naked for a news story about an artist.

The station is in the middle of a lawsuit filed by a former Sales Executive that claims the station encouraged the use of sexual favors and sexually explicit tactics to entice advertising clients and that drug use and alcohol use at advertising-related events was common.

No word if that lawsuit is playing a part in Applegate's announce retirement.

But if not it sure seems to be quite a coincidence.

Applegate's last day at the station is April 25th.

No word yet on a replacement.

Ummmmm....

Before you let the Photographer shoot video of your phone for a story's B-roll,  you might want to clear embarrassing material from your browser.

Someone at Chicago’s WGN station has likely learned that hard lesson after the Internet picked up on his/her PornHub mobile browsing habit.

One intrepid Reddit user spotted the bookmarked URL in the browser history of an iPhone used on-air during a segment on a new app for expungement.

By the way, we prefer YouPorn to PornHub...but that's just us.
