Finally in Philly

It took more than five months, but Disney's ABC O&O in Philadelphia, WPVI, finally has a news director.

WPVI President and GM John Morris sent an internal memo to staff on Tuesday announcing that Nneka Nwosu will take the reins of the Action News newsroom.

Nwosu, a Philadelphia native, is making an in-house transfer from sister O&O WLS in Chicago, where she served as vice president of marketing and local programming. Before shifting over to marketing, she spent time as one of WLS’s assistant news directors. Prior to Chicago, she put in eight years at Hearst's WCVB in Boston.

Morris leaned into local pandering in his staff memo, noting that Nwosu is such a diehard Philadelphia Eagles fan that "their 2018 Super Bowl win may have actually sent her into labor with one of her sons."

Nwosu took to LinkedIn to celebrate the move, posting: "Running the news department at the station I grew up watching is surreal! Thrilled to be coming home."

She steps into the top newsroom job on Oct. 5. While WPVI continues to hold the market's long-running ratings crown, Nwosu has immediate business on her desk: managing the transition to a new chief meteorologist following the retirement of long-time staple Cecily Tynan, who signed off on Monday after more than 30 years at the station.
