Tegna Anchor is Coming Back After Boat Crash

Longtime KARE (Minneapolis) main anchor Julie Nelson is back on the air in Minneapolis–St. Paul after a three-month medical absence following a serious June boating crash.

Nelson returned to the anchor chair at the Tegna NBC affiliate on Monday, co-anchoring the station’s 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. newscasts. Station management is easing her schedule back in before putting her back on the late news at 10:00 p.m.

Nelson had been sidelined since June 13, when she and her husband were involved in a late-night single-boat crash on Balsam Lake in Wisconsin. The cause of the crash still has some unanswered questions.

While initial reports termed the injuries non-life-threatening, the physical toll was substantial. Nelson sustained broken bones, deep lacerations, and significant nerve damage to her right arm.

Ahead of her return, Nelson took to social media to give viewers and colleagues an update on her rehabilitation:

“The good news is I am making great progress and anticipate being back to work soon. The not-so-great news is the nerves in my right arm are injured and, as I am learning, nerve recovery is frustratingly slow and unpredictable. But I’m fortunate to have a phenomenal team helping me heal.”

Nelson has been a cornerstone at the Golden Valley station since 2003, holding down the evening anchor desk in Market #15 for more than two decades.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
