Philly Station Goes the Cheap Route

When longtime morning Anchor Jim Donovan announced he was leaving KYW (Philly), many wondered who would replace him at the CBS O&O.

Well, the answer is….Nobody.

In a move that is classic CBS right now, the station brass has decided decided to shift people around and not add anyone. The morning show will be anchored by committee.

KYW weekend morning anchor Jan Carabeo will join Janelle Burrell on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday’s newscasts.

Burrell will solo anchor on Monday and Tuesday, while Carabeo gets those two days off.

Donovan is not being replaced, KYW is just adjusting Carabeo’s duties.

Hard to believe that the morning newscast will be solo anchored in a top 5 market.

“With the state of the industry, and looking at the way people consume media, we were evaluating whether you need to have an anchor team,” KYW GM Kelly Franks said. “So, for a while, we just let it sit, and what I saw in working with our news director was that extra added anchor was also another gatekeeper through the course of a very big day.”

In other words, we are saving a lot of money.
