Signing Off at CBS News

Among the shifting tides and structural changes at CBS News, Justice Correspondent Scott MacFarlane has decided it is time to chart a new course. After a tenure defined by his deep-dive reporting on the Hill and the Department of Justice, MacFarlane announced to colleagues during a 9 AM editorial call that he will be exiting the network in the coming days.

While the newsroom has seen its share of transition recently, for MacFarlane, the decision to move on became clear following a significant point of internal friction. He was reportedly deeply unsettled when, on the anniversary of the January 6th insurrection—a beat he has covered with exhaustive detail—CBS management opted to provide only minimal coverage of the milestone. For a correspondent who has dedicated years to documenting the fallout of that day, the editorial shift was a difficult pill to swallow.

In a statement shared on social media, MacFarlane confirmed his departure was a personal choice.

“This is my decision, and I appreciate the bosses at CBS for understanding it,” MacFarlane said. “I will always value the opportunity I had to work alongside the talented and committed professionals here. I’m proud to have had the words ‘CBS correspondent’ next to my name – always will be.”

MacFarlane joined the network in 2021, quickly becoming a staple of their political and legal coverage. However, as the network’s priorities evolved, his desire for a different editorial environment grew.

Looking ahead, MacFarlane expressed a desire to reclaim his voice outside of the traditional corporate broadcast structure. “For the next phase of my career, I look forward to some independence and finding new spaces to share my work in line with my personal goals,” he noted, signaling a move toward a more autonomous reporting style.
