CBS News Producer Quits Under Weiss's Leadership

It was a move that told many about what is happening inside CBS News.

Producer Alicia Hastey departed CBS News on Wednesday, issuing a scathing exit note that targeted the network’s strategic pivot under Bari Weiss. Although Hastey never explicitly named Weiss, her resignation arrived just two weeks after the new editor-in-chief unveiled a controversial “21st century” vision for the broadcaster. In her email, Hastey blasted a "sweeping new vision" that she argued has prioritized "heterodox" journalism over "traditional broadcast norms."

Hastey warned that the new directive has created a culture of self-censorship, writing that stories are now "evaluated not just on their journalistic merit but on whether they conform to a shifting set of ideological expectations." She described the current atmosphere as "hindered by fear and uncertainty," noting that the pressure to avoid "unfavorable headlines" has made her commitment to storytelling "increasingly becoming impossible." The producer’s exit serves as a direct rebuke of the strategy Weiss championed at a recent town hall, a shift Hastey ultimately called "so heartbreaking."
