End of an Era in Evansville
/After guiding Tri-State viewers through nearly four decades of severe weather, legendary Evansville meteorologist Jeff Lyons is hanging up his forecasting forecasting pointer.
The longtime WFIE Chief Meteorologist announced his retirement, signaling the end of an extraordinary 38-year run at the station and a 40-year career in broadcasting. For generations of viewers in the Evansville market, Lyons has been a steady, trusted voice during high-stakes weather events, earning a deeply devoted local following that includes his famous "Jack Wagon" segments and dedicated storm coverage. His final broadcast on the NBC affiliate's anchor desk is set for November 5.
Lyons' departure comes amid a sweeping corporate transformation of the local television landscape. WFIE is owned by broadcasting giant Gray Media. In a striking consolidation move, Gray recently took over Evansville’s CBS/Fox affiliate, WEVV, effectively merging the newsrooms of the market's competing stations under one corporate umbrella.
As Gray continues streamlining its operations across the region, losing an iconic, homegrown fixture like Lyons marks a massive milestone—and a daunting pair of shoes to fill—for the newly consolidated local newsroom. Byron Douglas is slated to step into the Chief Meteorologist role following Lyons' departure.
