Gray Buys 10 Allen Media

FTVLive was the FIRST to tell you that Gray was going to be buying a number of Allen Media stations.

After the FTVLive story, Gray announced that they are purchasing 10 of Allen Media properties, which will leave just 18 stations left in the AMG portfolio.

While this is certainly good news for those working at the 10 stations being sold to Gray, it is also not good news.

This quote should shed some light on what’s coming. "Gray expects the transaction to strengthen the company’s presence in the seven other markets by creating new duopolies that would allow Gray to “preserve and deepen public service to their communities with expanded local news, local weather, and local sports programming.”

What they didn’t say is that with duopolies come layoffs as duplicate positions are consolidated. Local news is rehashed on two or more channels using boring branding like "Midday News Now". As much as they try to spin it positively, it doesn't work that way.

Allen Media was dying on vine, and it was a matter of time before they closed up news, or sold off. There is no doubt that this sale to Gray will mean layoffs. But, no matter who bought them, layoffs were going to happen.

Some Allen Media employees will move to Gray and be in a better environment. Some will lose their jobs.

If yoiu’re in one of those stations being sold, just be ready and have a plan B.
