Independence Day

After 70 years of being an ABC affiliate, WPLG in Miami became an independent station this week.

The SoFlo station and ABC could not reach and agreement and ABC took their affiliation to WSVN,’s sub channel.

WPLG Reporter Jeff Weinsier, took to social media to try and help explain the switch to viewers.

This was his post.

Today is a bittersweet one.

In case you haven’t heard, after seven decades of being the ABC affiliate in Miami–Fort Lauderdale, WPLG and ABC are officially parting ways.

That’s 70 years of news, sports, debates, disasters, drama, and Dancing with the Stars …. together.

From Ann and Dwight to Louie…Kristi.. Nicole.. Calvin.. I think we’ve worked hard to build something South Florida could count on. And for all the changes over the years, one thing’s been constant: we’ve always been Channel 10 Eyewitness News …Local 10….. your ABC station.

Until… tomorrow.

Our parent company made the decision not to pay for programming that’s now easily found on streaming. ABC is all-in on Hulu and truthfully, the future of broadcast is shifting. Networks may not need affiliates someday. Industry insiders say we’re ahead of the curve. That doesn’t make this split any less emotional. It’s like losing a big brother you’ve grown up with..

There’s some anxiety. There’s a lot of hope.

BUT….

We’re still here.

We’re still Local 10.

And we’re still committed to South Florida.

While others are laying off, we’ve hired more than 40 people. That’s an entire newsroom in some markets. We believe in this place.

So here’s to change.

Here’s to independence.

Here’s to what’s next.
