"Deregulation likely won’t be good for the Staff, or for Journalism"

The tremors over the Nexstar/Tegna deal have not settled and many are still wondering what this means for their future.

One market that will be impacted is in Buffalo. Nexstar owns WIVB and a little watched sister station.

WGRZ is owned by Tegna.

The two stations go back and forth in the news ratings with Scripps-owned WKBW a distant third place station.

One twist is that many of the staff at Nexstar’s WIVB are in a union, while that is not the case at WGRZ.

So, when/if the deal goes through, how will Nexstar implement layoffs? That alone has people at both stations wondering what the future will bring.

The Buffalo News did a story on the sale and this line sums it up best, “Nobody really knows what is going to happen, but deregulation likely won’t be good for the staff, or for journalism in Buffalo”.

No truer words have been spoken.
