Signing off in Portland

Jeff Gianola, the main news anchor for KOIN (Portland), announced he will retire in late 2025. His final newscast is scheduled for November.

Gianola has been with KOIN 6 since 1998 and has worked as a news anchor in Portland for 43 years. Throughout his career, he hosted "Wednesday's Child," a recurring segment that assisted in finding permanent homes for hundreds of foster children.

He recently shared his diagnosis of Meniere's disease, which caused progressive hearing loss and led to a cochlear implant surgery in February 2025.

Gianola stated the decision to retire was his own. Tom Keeler, the station's General Manager, acknowledged Gianola's long career and impact on the community. “Jeff is an Oregon institution who has earned the respect of Oregonians for his insightful story telling that’s made a real impact on the lives of our residents for over 40 years. He broadcast the local news with the same talent and skills as a major network news anchor and viewers in the Portland-Vancouver-Salem DMA all benefitted from the trust Jeff was able to establish with the entire community,” Keeler said. “Jeff is an irreplaceable fixture in the region and will be greatly missed. Knowing Jeff, however, he will continue to serve our community in other ways for years to come.”
