Philly Anchor Says She Wanted to be Free and Liberated

FTVLive often tells you about the so shallow people in TV news. The ones that feel the need to post selfies endlessly, or dance videos, or show off their awards.

It can get exhausting.

But, now and then, we come across a remarkable person in TV news that gives us hope about the future of the business.

Meet KYW (Philly) Weekend Anchor Aziza Shuler.

Shuler did something that she should be proud of, but before we get to that, lets tell you a little more about her.

Shuler was born in a women's jail because her mother was incarcerated when she gave birth to her.

That’s a tough start of any kid, but it gets more challenging.

Shuler’s parents struggled with drug addiction. By 5 years old, she was forced into the foster care system, where she was abused physically and sexually.

At 12 years old, she woke up one day with a bald spot the size of a lemon slice. She found out it she had alopecia that was likely linked to trauma and stress in her young life.

Within a year, Shuler lost all her hair and has been bald ever since.

Viewers on her newscast didn’t know this due to the fact that Shuler has worn a wig to work every day.

But, she has decided to ditch the wig and she says doing so has made her feel free and liberated. She says, “I've lived more than half my life hiding this, not because I didn't feel beautiful, but because I was more so afraid of what others would think of me.”

I’ll tell you what I think.

I think that a woman who has overcome a very challenging childhood (to say the least) and never gave up on her goals and aspirations to become a Journalist needs to be held up high as an inspiring example.

As for her decision to go bald in public?

I say great for her. It seems like such a little thing when you look back on all she’s been through, but to her, this is huge.

I applaud her, I’m inspired by her, and I wanted to share her story.

As shallow as TV news has gotten, it is great to see someone with such dept.

Hats off and hair off to Aziza Shuler.

It’s nice to start off a week with an inspiring story here on FTVLive.
