It's a Good Question

In the past couple of weeks, Sinclair has announced plans to shut down about half a dozen newsrooms in some small to midsize markets.

One FTVLive reader emailed, asking if this is just the beginning.

Here’s their email:

My question is: should staff at other small market stations begin to be alarmed at this point? Not just Sinclair, but Gray and Nexstar? Is this a sign of what's to come over the next few years? Honestly, getting a job at a TV station right now seems like a questionable choice.

In addition, why is there no alarm over Sinclair destroying local news operations left and right? With newspapers dying and local TV shops being closed up, what's the future of local news? Is there one?

It is a valid question, and it does seem that more people across the country are in areas where local news is either not available or there are few choices for news.

One can only hope that the FCC takes a look at the Sinclair stations that shuttered their news operations.

No news should equal no broadcast license. It will send a clear message to other companies that might be thinking about pulling the plug on local news operations.

Just saying…
