Math is Hard

Yesterday, FTVLive told you that Memphis’ WHBQ did an “investigation” comparing prices in the grocery store, to what 8-year-old Kevin McCallister paid for them in the movie “Home Alone.”

The station included this graphic in its story.

An eagle-eyed FTVLive reader sent along this email:

Hello – First, I’ve been visiting your website for several months now and really enjoy your content.  I was reading your story about “Hard Hitting Journalism” from today’s posts.  Maybe it’s me, or perhaps math is not my strong suit, but in the graphic, there seems to be a calculation error.

HALF GALLON OF MILK (2%) - $2.19 + $2.19 + $1.97 = $6.36.  $6.35/3 = $2.12 (AVERAGE), not $2.32.

If it hadn’t been the very first one, I probably wouldn’t have noticed.  But the very first one?!?
