Resurfacing in Sin City

Kevaney Martin was a sports anchor and reporter at Roanoke's WFXR for the past two years. 

But now Martin has resurfaced at KLAS in Las Vegas a station owned which is also owned by the same company, Nexstar. 

“When I came to Vegas I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is where I need to be,’” Martin said. 

Vegas is booming when it comes to sports, so KLAS decided to add a third person to its sports department. The city is gaining an NHL expansion team, the Golden Knights, for the upcoming season. The NFL’s Oakland Raiders will be moving to Vegas in 2020. 

“The reason I was drawn to it was because of the Raiders and the Golden Knights and everything that’s going on here,” she said. “The Golden Knights we’re going to be covering like crazy starting this year. The Oakland Raiders, we’re going [to be] … acting like they’re already in Vegas, traveling with the team and doing a Raiders show … and really selling the Oakland Raiders to this Las Vegas market.”

Martin said she chose KLAS over offers from seven other stations.

“I had some offers from bigger markets [than Vegas] — top 10, top 20, actually, and I turned them down to come here,” she said. “I talked to my mentors and they were like, ‘At this point of the game, if you’re covering a professional team like the Raiders, like the Golden Knights, it doesn’t matter what size market you’re in.’ ”
