Cleveland Anchor to Return After Recharging His Batteries

When Mark Nolan signed off WKYC Channel 3 in early 2012, he insisted the move was not prompted by any kind of midlife crisis. "I'm calling it halftime," he said at the time.

"Well, looks like halftime is over," he said Thursday during a telephone interview. "Time to get back in the game."

Nolan and the station executives confirmed that he will become Romona Robinson's new co-Anchor across the street at WOIO.

He will Anchor the station's 4 and 6 p.m. newscasts.

The official announcement is expected from the station this week.

"We are very excited about someone of Mark's talents and versatility joining our staff," said Dominic Mancuso, the general manager at Channel 19 and its sister station, WUAB Channel 43.

"The idea of going back on television is exciting and scary at the same time," Nolan said. "But that's good. If it was boring, it wouldn't be any fun. And it will be great fun working with Romona again. That opportunity was just too good to pass up."

Nolan recently signed a new long-term contract with local radio station WMJI, so he won't be giving up the radio gig.

"I couldn't think about a full-time schedule at Channel 19, because I literally would never sleep," he said. "I also recently moved downtown, so I won't be driving in from Geauga County. That made this more workable, too."

When he left WKYC, he said "It really is my decision." "It's something I've been thinking about for a year or so. I'm 42, and 42 isn't what it used to be in this business. It's a young person's game."

What's changed?

"The batteries absolutely have been recharged," he said. "I'm ready to pick up a little extra work."

Buffalo Station Hires New Sports Anchor

Last week, FTVLive told you that WIVB in Buffalo had parted ways with main Sports Anchor Steve Vesey.

It didn't take long for the station to replace him.

WHTM (Harrisburg) Weekend Sports Anchor Josh Reed is shuffling off to Buffalo to take the main  gig at WIVB.

Before joining WHTM – which has the same owner, Media General, as Channel 4 – Reed was the sports director at WHAG in Hagerstown, Md.

"I believe viewers will appreciate his storytelling, passion for sports and will connect with his personality when they watch him," said Channel 4 News Director Scott Levy. "With Bills season underway, we're lucky to have found a great internal candidate so quickly within Media General."

Leaving WPXI in the Burgh

Mark Barash is retiring as director of programming after 31 years on the job at WPXI, but he wants everyone to know he isn’t leaving the workforce.

Barash has been at the station over 3 decades and was also the station manager for Pittsburgh Cable News Channel.

But his biggest claim to fame is that he hired Scott Jones back in the mid 90's. The hiring of Jones had to be the highlight of his career and let's be honest, he never hired a better person before or since.

“I have this yearning to go out and trust my entrepreneurial spirit and my work ethic,” Barash says.

“When you’re at the same place for 31 years, you’re going to repeat some things you’ve been doing over and over and over again, hopefully, because you’re doing them right, and they work,” he said.

“But after a while, some of those things can become a little tedious.”

Plus after Jones left, the Cox station just wasn't as fun as it used to be.

Barash says that after his final day at the end of this month, his next venture is likely to involve digital media: “The distribution of product, however it gets into your home, or into your phone or tablet, is here, and it is big. And it’s going to get bigger. There will be not only eyeballs tied to that, but also money.”

Take it from us Mark, we went digital 15 years ago and never looked back.

Uh-Oh!

Bad news for TV News Anchors.

Microsoft has been testing a new app called NewsCast.

The app makes a playlist of news story summaries and reads them to the users. The program is created by the Bing team and is meant to make traveling more productive.

NewsCast reportedly uses Bing's text-to-speech program to read out things that last 30 second each.

So far, it appears that the app's voice is not as natural as Cortana's but still better than Wolf Blitzer's.

Megyn Kelly Goes on Vacation, Internet Freaks

TV Anchors go on vacation all the time. But for some reason, people are freaking out that Fox News Anchor Megyn Kelly is going to take a few days off.

Kelly is taking 10 days off from her job at Fox News and the conspiracy clowns think there is much more to it.

"She's being suspended for grilling Donald Trump," said one emailer to FTVLive.

The idea that an Anchor going on vacation is news, tells you exactly some of the problems with THE news.

FTVLive is going to take a brief vacation in early September.

Just a heads up.

CNN Boss Flies to Kenya to Apologize

It was a long way to go to say you're sorry, but Tony Maddox, CNN’s global Executive Vice President and Managing Director, who oversees CNN’s global editorial policy, flew all the way from Atlanta to Nairobi to personally apologize to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Kenyans.

Kenya was not happy after CNN labeled the country a "Hot Bed of Terror" at the time President Obama was visiting the country.

“We acknowledge there is a widespread feeling that the report annoyed many, which is why we pulled down the report as soon as we noticed. It wasn’t a deliberate attempt to portray Kenya negatively, it is regrettable and we shouldn’t have done it. There is a world at a war with extremists; we know what a hotbed of terror looks like, and Kenya isn’t one,” Maddox said.

President Kenyatta, while expressing his disappointment at the story, urged CNN to stick to factual reporting and to show more responsibility in its delivery of security-related news about Kenya.

“In one stroke, CNN’s description of Kenya as a ‘hotbed of terror’ undermined the sacrifices made by our Kenyan troops, and the value of hundreds of lives lost, and relegated them to nothing. That’s why Kenyans, as expressed by those on Twitter, were so angry. Kenya is nothing like the countries that have real war. There was no reason to portray Kenya in that way,” the President said.

Kenya's tourism board pulled a big advertising package that was scheduled to air on CNN after the network's claim it was a "hotbed of terror".

Ahhhh....now we know why CNN personally apologized.

Man Sues CNN for Lifting His YouTube Video

Buffalo resident Alfonzo Cutaia was sitting in office last November watching a lake effect storm move into the area. He decided to record the storm on his phone and upload it to YouTube.

He sensed he had a hit video on his hands and opted to generate revenue via YouTube’s monetization program. Cutaia selected “Standard YouTube License” and watched the hits roll in.

But  he claims that some news organizations didn’t play by the rules and now things have become messy.

The recording did very well indeed. By the end of day one Cutaia’s video had been viewed more than 513,000 times. On day two things blew up with an additional 2.3 million hits and soon after the New York resident was receiving requests from news outlets – CBS, ABC, CNN, NBC, Reuters and AP – to use his footage.

But according to a lawsuit filed this week by Cutaia in a New York court, around November 18 Canada’s CBC aired the video online without permission, with a CBC logo as an overlay.

After complaining to CBC about continued unauthorized use, last month Cutaia was told by CBC that the company had obtained the video from CNN on a 10-day license. However, Cutaia claims that the video was used by CBC and its partners for many months, having been supplied to them by CNN who also did not have a license.

In his complaint, Cutaia seeks injunctions against both CBC and CNN to stop further unlawful use of his video. He also accuses the news outlets of “intentional and willful” copyright infringement and seeks appropriate damages.

Interestingly, the lawsuit also claims that both CBC and CNN violated the DMCA when the companies ‘liberated’ it from the YouTube system and offered it for viewing elsewhere.

CBC and CNN are also accused of distributing the video despite knowing that the copyright management information had been removed.

In closing, Cutaia seeks permanent injunctions against CBC and CNN, accuses them of varying degrees of copyright infringement, while demanding a jury trial to determine damages.

Here's the video:

David and George in Diva Fight at ABC News?

Screen Shot 2015-08-14 at 5.22.20 AM.png

Page Six says that ABC News has a big diva battle going on and it's between two guys.

They report that ABC newsmen David Muir and George Stephanopoulos have been bickering over who would cover the US Embassy opening in Havana, Cuba story?

Sources tell us that Muir and Stephanopoulos were both angling to be in Cuba as the American flag is raised over the US Embassy. But, in the end, neither anchor ended up going because ABC didn’t get permission to bring its “Flyaway” satellite truck into Cuba.

One industry source said, “David and George have a big rivalry. Both were jockeying to go, neither wanted to share the spotlight. ABC considered sending them both, then had to scrap the plan because they couldn’t get their dish in to broadcast live in HD.”

The source added, “Not only is there a dish issue, there is a male diva issue at ABC.”

Network insiders said they sent Jim Avila because of his previous Cuba coverage, and they’ll go live by purchasing satellite time. An ABC rep said of the anchor feud, “Whoever is shopping this ridiculous rumor should really find a more productive way to spend their time.”

Huh?

Not sure I have ever seen this ending to a newscast:

Risks blowing his TV career by blowing his 5th grade cornet on air? He blames it on the Eric & Kathy Mornings 101.9fm The MIX Chicago.
