Deuce is Bumped up in Knoxville

WBIR has bumped up Assistant News Director Martha Jennings to the News Director gig at the station.

Jennings had been the interim ND since late last year when Gannett promoted News Director Christy Moreno to News Director job at KUSA Denver.

It appears that the station had finally decided it pocketed enough on the saved News Director salary, that they finally gave Jennings the gig.

Bumped up in Austin

KEYE (Austin) has named Ana María Lamas as the station's new Executive Producer.

“I’m very excited to be back in Texas,” says Ana María, who oversees both Telemundo and KEYE-TV nightside newscasts since March 30.

Lama most recently spent three years as Managing Editor at KVEA Telemundo Los Angeles,  previously worked as Managing Editor for Telemundo’s KTMD in Houston in 2010.

Studio Cameraman is Charged with Stealing News Car

Okay...this one is bizarre, even by TV news standards.

An employee of WPTV in West Palm Beach was arrested for stealing a station news car, but the story is much more bizarre than just that.

West Palm Police responded to a fight outside a local bar.

When officers arrived, they spotted several men, including one identified as Tracy Matthews, 44, of West Palm Beach.

He showed a WPTV employee’s identification. And the officers noted Matthews was jittery, overly talkative and was sweating profusely.

While one officer checked on potential suspects, another noticed a Dodge Durango with the WPTV logo parked nearby.

A man sat motionless on the passenger seat, eyes closed.

The officer walked up to the rolled down window and notice a clear crack pipe inside a cigarette pack out in the open. The cop woke up the man, who identified himself as Rafael Novas, 44.

While searching Novas, the officer allegedly found a plastic syringe with an orange cap in Novas’ shorts.

About 1/4 of the syringe was filled with what Novas admitted was heroin.

Novas told the officer he is NOT a WPTV employee, and was arrested. But, he did tell police his buddy picked him up at the drying tank about 6:30 a.m. in the TV van!

Cops called News Director Dan Wilson to check on Matthews. Wilson told them Matthews’ job was inside the newsroom, and he was not allowed to drove company vehicles.

Wilson dispatched reporter Ashleigh Walters and a cameraman to get the car.

According to the incident report, Walters confirmed Matthews is a studio cameraman who is not allowed to leave in a company car.

Police charged Matthews with motor vehicle theft, a felony, and Novas with possession of a controlled substance.

WPTV has so far not reported the story on the newscast.

And yet some of you still wonder why stations are switching to robotic cameras? As far as we know, no robotic camera has been busted for stealing a company car and hanging out with a tweeker.

Just saying....

Leaving TV for Technology Job

Michael Gay was VP of Interactive Media for the Journal Broadcast Group. When Scripps took over the Journal stations, Gay decided to put TV news in his rear view mirror and moved into the technology world.

Gay has taken a job with NDN, a Digital Media Exchange platform for online news publishers. So, while he is leaving TV news, he will still be working with local stations.

NDN named Gay the VP, Local Broadcast. In this role, Gay will have overall management of NDN’s relationships with local broadcasting partners and will develop and lead a multi-year strategy for NDN’s local television business.

“Michael’s experience in the local broadcast industry makes him an ideal candidate to strengthen NDN’s leadership position in the supply of local news content,” says Jill Peters, Chief Digital Officer at NDN.

“NDN created a best in class video solution for local broadcast publishers,” says Gay.  “NDN enables innovation and monetization well beyond what publishers could accomplish on their own.  I am honored to now be a part of this team and to accelerate video growth for local broadcasters across the industry.”

Heads Up! Photographer Catches Manhole Exploding

WGRZ in Buffalo was doing a story on an underground fire in the electrical system under the street.

While one witness is being interviewed, a manhole cover is blown sky high behind him.

While the Reporter was lame at best with his live lead in, the witness was calm cool and collected, even while the manhole cover was still in the air.

The video is up after the jump.

Rev. Al is Not Welcome....

It appears that MSNBC host and huge camera hog, Al Sharpton has been asked to stay away from the funeral of a black man shot and killed by a white police officer in South Carolina.

The New York Daily News reports the family of Walter Scott has said they do not want the reverend to attend the funeral.

Sharpton said in a statement to the Daily News’ story that it is “bogus” and “has no merit.”

Sharpton said he has been invited to preach and lead a prayer vigil in North Charleston

“There has never been a discussion about me attending or participating in the funeral on Saturday, since everyone knows (we didn't know Al) that NAN’s convention with thousands of delegates is happening in New York and doesn’t end until Saturday night,” Rev. Sharpton said in a statement.

“I have not decided whether or not I will accept the invitation to preach in North Charleston and participate in the prayer vigil on Sunday. However, I am told the mayor and police chief have said that if I do choose to come they will attend the service as we seek healing and justice in these matters,” the statement reads.

Earlier this week, Sharpton called for national reform on police conduct and said he planned to travel to Charleston in the coming days to visit the Scott family.

Oh goody...

A Tradition unlike any other....

FTVLive spent the weekend trying to get rid of the last remnants of this nasty cold cuddled up on the couch and watching the Masters.

There is no other TV event that we look forward to more than the Masters on CBS.

Once again the network did a solid job with their coverage and while Tiger Woods was not much of a factor in the tournament, he did say some things that raised a few eyebrows. Woods was caught on camera calling himself a "dumb ass" and muttered "fucking god" into a live mic. CBS did apologize  to viewers for that remark.

On Sunday, Tiger was in the trees on the 9th hole when he hit a root with his second shot. Woods let out a scream and grabbed his wrist.

By the 10th hole he seemed to be fine again and after his round he told CBS that he "popped a bone out" and that he was able to put it back in and continue.

"Really?," said a surprised Bill Macatee to Tiger talking about his on course surgery.

"Yeah" said Woods.

"Wow...OK," Macatee replied.

Most people on social media were surprised that Woods could fix a popped out bone just like that.

21 year old Jordan Spieth won the Masters with a record breaking performance and while we are not going to say that we predicted that he would win the Masters. Back in August, we laid down $20 bucks on Spieth winning the Green Jacket at the Mirage.

Looks like we have some money to collect:
