The Lowest of the Low

This morning, FTVLive told you that WNWO in Toledo had one of the lowest rated newscasts in the country.

The station's two morning newscasts pull in just 1,000 viewers. To give you an idea how low that is, it's likely that there are 1,000 people reading FTVLive right at this moment.

We wondered if this is the lowest rated newscast in the entire country?

Well, an FTVLive reader emailed us and says that WNWO has some company in the ratings basement.

An article from the Charlotte Observer says that WJZY Fox Charlotte's morning show, launched in August and the most polished of its daily newscasts, averaged fewer than 1,000 viewers at 6 a.m.

Less than 1,000?!

I'm fairly certain the infomercial for the ShamWow pulls in more viewers.

Just saying....

Taking Over the Main Anchor Chair in Dallas?

Remember back on November 19th when FTVLive told you that  KTVK AM anchor Kaley O’Kelley was headed to Dallas as a primary anchor for KTVT?

Many wondered at the Dallas station where O'Kelley would be fitting in. The rumors started to fly and the Dallas station was not too happy with FTVLive putting the word out that O'Kelley was headed their way.

Earlier, FTVLive reported that KTVT main Anchor Karen Borta was leaving the evening newscast to start anchoring the station's low rated morning show.

The station has not announced who will replace Borta's spot in the evenings, but we are betting big bucks that Kaley O'Kelley will be part of this.

By the way, we still don't buy that Borta moving to mornings is completely her idea. Just saying....

Stay tuned and remember where you read it First.

Wow! Toledo Station Might Have Lowest Rated Newscast in the Country

The November ratings book was a clean sweep for WTVG, Channel 13 inToledo.

The Nielsen ratings show that the station was an across the board winner in total number of viewers and viewers in the 25-to-54 age demographic.

But wait till you see how bad it is at the bottom of the ratings.

The Toledo Blade writes that WTVG beat its ratings rival WTOL-TV, Channel 11, in all the head-to-head numbers, save for the number of men ages 25 to 54 watching the noon and 5 to 6 p.m. newscasts, and tied among men in the same demo at 6 p.m.

In a word, the local ABC affiliate was dominant.

In total viewership — ages 2 plus — in the morning, WTVG was watched by an average audience of 20,000 between 5 and 6, and 44,000 between 6 and 7, compared to 7,000 and 17,500, respectively, for WTOL.

In its first November sweeps after a management and personnel shake-up earlier this year, WNWO-TV, Channel 24, was watched by 1,000 total viewers between 5 and 6 a.m. and again between 6 and 7 a.m., remaining flat from November, 2013.

Are you kidding me? A 1,000 total viewers?

Damn! That has to be one of the lowest rated newscasts in the country. The station bills itself as "Your News Station"...the reason is YOUR the only one that is watching it.

Cops Continue to Search Gunman that Shot Texas Weatherman

There was not a lot of information for police to go on Thursday as they tried to track down KCEN meteorologist Patrick Crawford's shooter.

Officers said they do not think he is still in the immediate area, but that doesn't mean they're not looking; there are still a lot of patrols going on in the area

Cops were back the station on Thursday, combing through fields again for any clues.  But they admit, it's going to take some time to find the shooter.

"What it's going to take is a lot of leg work, a lot of detective work," said Sgt. Kevin Ferguson, patrol sergeant for the McLennan County Sheriff's Office.

"There has been a few calls reporting suspicious people,” he said.

As FTVLive told you yesterday, police have released a sketch (right) that Crawford helped them make. The Weather Anchor claims he did not know the man that shot him.

Crawford remains in the hospital but is in stable condition and is recovering well at Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Temple.

"So far he is on target if not moving ahead of schedule," said Dr. Matthew Davis at a new conference Thursday afternoon.

Dr. Davis said Patrick was a little bit sleepy but happy and has had very pleasant interactions with nurses and staff.

Craftcaster Becomes PIO

Back on December 5th, FTVLive wrote that former KSAZ Fox O&O weekend anchor Kristen Keogh had started up a news venture doing crafting shows on YouTube.

Keogh teamed up with KPNX Reporter Hailey Francis to launch a YouTube channel called the CraftCasters.

The two cook and do crafts on the Internet.

In our December 5th story we said:

Proving that TV people are not qualified to do anything else....

A couple of weeks ago, FTVLive told you that  KSAZ Fox O&O weekend anchor Kristen Keogh was leaving the station to start her own venture.

Believe it or not, it isn't in PR.

Well guess what?

Sources tell FTVLive that Keogh has just taken a job in PR. Word is that she is becoming the PIO for the Arizona Attorney General.

No word if she will wear her Craftcasters apron at the press conferences.

Stay tuned....

Longtime Dallas Anchor Moved to Mornings

KTVT Anchor Karen Borta has been the evening anchor at the station for as long anyone can remember.

But starting in mid-January, Borta is going from the evening to the mornings.

She held her own newsroom staff meeting to tell her co-workers that she was headed to the AM shift. And although we would love to believe that this move was fully and 100% her choice, when you watch the video of her meeting, you just get the feeling that this isn't exactly what she wanted.

Maybe it's just the cynic in me, but watch and judge for yourself:

Uh-Oh! Protestors Turn on Al Sharpton

The people that Al Sharpton claims to "represent" have grown as tired of the man as many others have.

The NY Daily News writes that young black activists from Ferguson had trekked to Washington for Sharpton’s “National Justice for All” march last Saturday, only to find themselves relegated to the backdrop of what looked more like an MSNBC stage production than any genuine showing of grass-roots resistance.

“This whole thing is basically for media,” observed Leon Kemp, a St. Louis activist who tweets under the handle @WyzeChef. After “Black Twitter,” as it’s called, erupted into several days of heated talk about Sharpton’s co-optation, @WyzeChef added: “I didn’t have issue with Al Sharpton as a person. That has changed.”

The levee seemed to break once and for all Saturday evening when Sharpton’s daughter, Dominique, declared the event “Al Sharpton’s March” on Twitter. Though she quickly deleted the offending tweet, activists were already apoplectic.

Sharpton, it seems, has finally worn out his welcome among younger black leaders, who until now had at least been willing to tolerate his presence and the cameras that come with it.

Young black activists of Ferguson and New York, who have put their bodies on the line to foster a nationwide movement against police violence are figuring out that Sharpton’s pernicious influence is much more acute, and damaging.

Many in the black community having been saying for years that Sharpton does not "represent them' and now it's clear that his act is wearing very thin for everyone.

Maybe it's time MSNBC got up the guts and sent the Rev packing.

Last Of Original Directors Signing off at Turner Broadcasting

Tom Gaut, one of the last Original Directors at Turner Broadcasting is working his last day Today.

When CNN signed on the air on June 1, 1980 at 6PM, just two hours later Gaut was in the Director's chair calling the 3rd hour on that first day. Today he does his last show.

"It will be a sad day for me.  I'm leaving Turner Broadcasting, after 34 1/2 years," Gaut tells FTVLive.

For the last 7 1/2 years, Gaut has been directing Morning Express with Robin Meade. Which means two of the nicest people in TV news were working side by side.

"She is a very special person, I will miss my mornings with Robin", Gaut says.

And we are sure she will miss you as well Tom.

Good Luck!

Is Larry King Trying to Buy a Painting of His Mugshot?

Larry King maybe looking to add to his art collection, but this is one piece we doubt you would see on his wall.

The founder of Ocean Drive magazine, Jerry Powers recently took up pop art, and one of his first paintings was an Andy Warhol-style four-panel acrylic painting inspired by the Miami mugshot of former CNN talker Larry King

Powers says he received a mysterious call from someone who wanted to buy the piece.

“It’s a one-of-a-kind painting,” Powers said. “It’s for sale for $50,000, but this guy who wouldn’t identify himself wanted to give me between $24,000 and $28,000.”

The only identifying information that the caller gave is that he phoned from Los Angeles.

The caller also told asked that, if he bought the piece, Powers would agree not to do King again for at least three years.

In the end, Powers declined to sell — but now, he’s pretty convinced the 81-year-old King had something to do with it.

Said Powers: “After talking to this guy, I’m pretty sure he’s working for Larry.”

King’s 1971 arrest for grand larceny in the Miami has been a constant source of embarrassment for King, who never discusses it and cringes when it’s brought up.

So, for you would be artist that might want to make some money on the side. Here's Larry King's mugshot from 1971. Paint away!

Bernard Goldberg: CNN is a disgrace

Fox News Contributor Bernard Goldberg says that CNN is a disgrace.... it's even worse than he thought.

He points to the CNN hosts with their hands up in the air.

Goldberg writes on his blog,  You can’t put an opinion show on the air under the name of a hard news broadcast. It’s against the rules. But the cable network  has a problem. If you could bottle CNN you’d have a cure for insomnia. So Jeff Zucker, who runs the network, is trying to spice things up. And so he puts four women around a desk – several of whom aren’t bad looking – and tells them to spout off. I get it. But you can’t do that under the banner of a hard news broadcast.  Credibility and trust matter in news, as hopelessly naive as that sounds.

He then writes, CNN needs to decide what kind of show it wants. If they want to turn “CNN Newsroom” into an opinion show to boost their ratings, fine. But a news organization can’t pretend to be straight news and then have its anchors raise their hands in sympathy with the protestors.

So here’s an idea for CNN: Until you figure out what you want to be, stop lecturing us about how you’re the news organization that’s down the middle; that we can count on you for unbiased news that isn’t driven by ideology. Sanctimony, when it becomes funny, doesn’t work.

Ouch!

Police Release Sketch of Man that Shot Texas Weatherman

The Texas Department of Public Safety released a sketch Thursday afternoon of the man they believe shot 35-year-old KCEN-HD Meteorologist Patrick Crawford.

The search for the suspect has been ongoing since Wednesday morning when Crawford was shot in the KCEN parking lot.

Crawford remains in the hospital but is in stable condition and is recovering well at Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Temple.

"So far he is on target if not moving ahead of schedule," said Dr. Matthew Davis at a new conference Thursday afternoon.

Dr. Davis said Crawford was a little bit sleepy but happy and has had very pleasant interactions with nurses and staff.

Weatherman Says He Does Not Know the Man That Shot Him

A forensic artist is working with KCEN Weather Anchor Patrick Crawford to create a composite sketch of the gunman who shot him yesterday morning in the parking lot of the station.

The sketch could be released this afternoon, Department of Public Safety Trooper D.L. Wilson said.

Crawford remains at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Temple where he underwent surgery Wednesday.

He told investigators Thursday morning that he did not know the man who shot him, Wilson said.

Scott & White scheduled a news conference at 4 p.m. Today to provide an update on Crawford's condition.
