Even the President Can't Help New Day's Numbers

1110.jpg

CNN's New Day thought they had a blockbuster show planned.

Jake Tapper was sitting down with President Obama and Chris Cuomo was interviewing Dennis Rodman while he's in rehab.

Many inside CNN thought this show would help bump the sagging ratings......it didn't.

New Day pulled a tiny 57,000 in the demo and just 204,000 viewers overall. Fox News had more viewers in the demo, than New Day's total viewership.

MSNBC's Morning Joe basically doubled CNN's numbers in both total and demos and Robin Meade over on HLN also beat New Day.

As FTVLive FIRST reported, CNN boss Jeff Zucker is looking to tweak the struggling morning program to try and get it out of the ratings basement.

Stay tuned....

Have a Coke a Smile and some Commentary

If you believe the Internet (and who doesn't), the right wing is all upset over Coke's Super Bowl commercial. The spot showed pictures of a diverse America over the song "America the Beautiful" being sung in different languages.

WXIA (Atlanta) Anchor Brenda Wood took time out of the newscast to give her thoughts on the people that didn't like the commercial and how narrow minded they were.

She makes valid points and we agree with what she said. But, call us old school when we still say we didn't like it.

Having a News Anchor take time out of the newscast to give you her opinion does just doesn't seem right. Wood took to the air to stick up for a major corporation that sells a drink that many would say is bad for you.

But, this much is for sure, Coke got exactly what they wanted out of the spot. They created a controversy that people are talking. And they even got a news anchor to take 2:30 out of the newscast to talk about coke some more.

When did a TV newscast become talk radio?

Just asking....

Here's Wood sticking up for Atlanta based Coke on an Atlanta newscast:

Chicago Reporter's DUI/Battery Case could be Resolved Tomorrow

Screen Shot 2014-02-03 at 3.22.40 PM.png

The DUI and Battery case against WBBM Reporter Dave Savini maybe settled at a court hearing tomorrow.

The Chicago Investigative Reporter was arrested back in early January for DUI after a traffic accident in a Taco Bell parking lot. Police say Savini then shoved another motorist who was trying to photograph Savini’s license plate, and that Savini drove away from the restaurant, along with two minor passengers.

The case is expected in court on Tuesday. DuPage County Judge James Konetski turned down a request filed on behalf of the Chicago Tribune to allow a still photographer inside the courtroom for Savini’s appearance.

WBBM has yet to report the arrest of Savini on their newscasts.

Because...you know....the communications business.

After more than 30 years KTSP Traffic and Entertainment Reporter Rusty Gatenby has been kicked to the curb.

Gentenby took to social media to confirm the news:

"Hey everyone.. well it's true.. after more than 30 years at KSTP I am moving on. I have nothing bad to say, in fact, I feel truly lucky for the amazing times I've had. I challenge anyone to have had more fun at a job than I have. I hope to see you all again down the road. In the meantime, I'm going to take a long long nap."

KSTP News Director Lindsay Radford confirmed that that Gatenby was gone from the station, but would not say anything else citing this as a personnel matter.

Because you know, this is the communications business.

Millions Tune in to Watch Peyton Manning Suck

Omah....Whoops!!!!

Omah....Whoops!!!!

The Super Bowl was a blowout from the opening kick, but it still managed to pull a 47.6 household rating and 70 share.

It was down slightly from last year's good game 48.1 rating and 71 share.

Surprisingly neither Seattle or Denver were the markets with the most viewers. It was Kansas City who pulled a 58.1 rating.

And we're guessing since the Broncos are the Kansas City Chief's main rival, those viewers enjoyed watching the Broncos get spanked.

OK...Now It's Official

We've known about the move since late last year, but ABC News president Ben Sherwood finally made it official Today in a memo to the staff.

Shrewood told the staff in an internal memo that ABC Mara Schiavocampo has joined ABC News as a New York-based correspondent.

Schiavocampo, who’d been with NBC since 2007 is jumping over to ABC News.

Here's  Sherwood’s memo to staff:

Mara is a dynamic storyteller and skilled journalist who has covered nearly every major news story in the past decade.  During the manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombers, Mara anchored for five straight hours as news broke that suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed during a shootout with Watertown police.

Mara’s reporting has been recognized with several honors, including an Emmy for her coverage of the 2008 Presidential Election.  In 2007, she was the only broadcast journalist to receive the National Association of Black Journalists’ “Emerging Journalist of the Year” Award.

Mara got her start in journalism right here at ABC News as a desk assistant for Radio in 2001 and as a producer for “ABC News Now” in 2004.

Please join me in giving Mara a warm welcome back to ABC News.

Seahawks Fan Drops Pants during Live Shot

Seahawks Fan Drops Pants during Live Shot

Viewers of KCPQ got quite an eyeful last night watching the station's coverage of the celebrations in Seattle.

One fan decided to liven up the live shot a bit, by dropping his pants and showing everyone his....well...... you know.

Let's hope the station's ratings were bigger than this guy's....well... you know.

Jerry Seinfeld was right, cold does lead to shrinkage.

The picture is up after the jump. We must give you two warnings, first it is not safe for work and second after you see it you can't un-see it.

Jump if you dare.

How I Work - Jason DeRusha

Today FTVLive heads to frozen Minneapolis and CBS O&O WCCO to catch up with Morning Anchor and social media guru Jason DeRusha to see how he works.

jason-derusha.jpg

Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Current gig: Morning/Noon Anchor
Current computer: At work, a company-issued Dell PC with webcam for Skype interviews and two sweet monitors. At home I have a desktop iMac and a Mac Mini.
Current mobile device: iPhone 5, iPad
One word that best describes how you work: Multi-tasking.

What are your favorite Apps that you can't live without?

Feedly, Yahoo! Sports, currently spending a lot of time playing Minion Rush (thanks kids for introducing me to that). Obviously Twitter, Facebook, Facebook Pages (we administer our Morning Show page), and Instagram.

What's your workspace like?

unnamed.jpg

It used to be a mess, but my desk recently moved to the spot right outside the news director’s office. So now I try to keep it clean.  I keep TweetDeck on the monitor on the right, the iNews software and email on the left.

I love pens, so I have a coffee mug full of cool, unique pens.

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can't you live without?

The weird-looking plastic thing with a handle on my desk is my Clever Coffee Dripper. I love coffee, so I bring in my own from home and make a single cup of the good stuff. Pop in a filter, cover with hot water, it drips right into my WCCO mug. (I drink Dogwood Coffee and Bull Run Coffee – both great Minnesota coffee roasters).

What Music are you listening to?

I am an unabashed pop music lover. My coworkers constantly rib me about liking Taylor Swift, they certainly could rip on the fact that I dig Ke$ha.

What's your sleep routine like?

Ha! The life of a morning anchor! I typically go to sleep at the same time my 6 and 8-year-old sons sleep: 8pm. My alarm goes off at 2:28am, so I can get out the door at 3am, and get to work at 3:30am. We’re on the air at 4:30am. 6 ½ hours is about what I got when I was a nightside reporter, so I feel pretty rested. I sometimes get an hour nap before the kids get off the bus at 3:45pm.

Best Advice you Ever Got?

When I was in college, my mentor was a very polarizing anchor – he always ranked #1 as most loved and #1 as most hated. He told me that if 40% of the audience LOVES him, and 60% hates him, then he’s getting Super Bowl-like ratings every night. It gave me the freedom to be myself on the air. But “be yourself” isn’t enough – you also have to work harder than most. Thanks, Jerry Taff from WISN-TV!

Best Thing About your Job?

We have total creative freedom to try whatever we want. And my coworkers are a lot of fun. It takes a special person (on and off-air) to be functional before 7am.

Worst thing about your Job?

Getting dressed in the dark. I also miss seeing the nightside people I worked with here for the last ten years!

You Know it's Sweeps.... Part 2

The last time FTVLive showed you WJAR Reporter Julie Tremmel she was showing us what to do if a bear attacks you.

Well, it's sweeps, so Tremmel is back with.....ummmmmmm.... we're not exactly sure. But by the time she wraps up her live shot, she seems a bit stuck.

After  the shot watch the one Anchor's reaction and what the other anchor says.

That about sums it up.
