Chicago Station Clams up when it's One of Their Own

Dave-Savini1.png

FTVLive told you days ago that WBBM Investigative Reporter Dave Savani was busted on DUI and other charges.

You can bet if it was a top Chicago political figure that was arrested, WBBM would be all over the story.  But, since this is one of their own, the station has been mum on the story.

Robert Feder reports that WBBM-Channel 2, where Savini, 47, has been a Prominent figure since 2004, hasn’t said a word about it on any of its newscasts or on its website. Nor has the station issued any statement since court documents showed Savini’s blood-alcohol level registered 0.134 after he failed field tests and admitting consuming alcohol in the early hours of Jan 4.

Feder says that over the weekend he reached out to Marty Wilke, president and general manager of CBS 2, to ask her to comment on the matter and to clarify Savini’s employment status while he awaits a Jan. 21 court date. He told her that he believed the matter was serious enough to deserve a response from her personally. Feder pointed out that he always admired Wilke’s openness when she was general manager of Tribune Broadcasting WGN-Channel 9 before she joined CBS 2 in 2012 and totally clammed up.

He never heard back from her.

Instead he received the following email message from a spokeswoman for CBS 2: “At this time, we have declined all requests for comment and are referring all press inquiries to Dave’s attorney.” (Never mind that when the  Chicago Tribune called Savini’s attorney, Terry Ekl, he refused to comment.)

Feder points out and we agree 100% that It strikes is height of hypocrisy for a station that demands answers from everyone else not to respond to legitimate inquiries about one of its own employees.

Remember that the next time you see Savini, in all his self-righteous arrogance, chasing after some unwitting target who doesn’t want to talk to him. Or the next time CBS 2 makes a big deal about a minor celebrity who gets in trouble.

“Original Reporting” my ass.

We couldn't have said it any better Robert.

Sacked Chicago Reporter Resurfaces across the Street

Patrick-Elwood-184x300.png

Former WFLD Anchor/Reporter Patrick Elwodd, who was pushed out at the Fox O&O after 15 years has resurfaced across the street at WGN.

Robert Feder writes that Elwood debuted Friday on the Tribune Broadcasting station as a freelance reporter. “As a native Chicagoan who’s worked here for several years, he clearly knows the city,” said WGN news director Greg Caputo. “And I’m glad he’ll be able to do some reporting for us.”

Elwood was among numerous Chicago news veterans who were purged from Fox 32 last year as management remade the station. He was succeeded in his last role as feature reporter on “Good Day Chicago” by Jake Hamilton, former movie reviewer for KRIV-TV, the Fox station in Houston.

“It’s been a crazy couple months but as John Lennon sings ‘Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans.’ ” Elwood wrote on his Facebook page. “So from the station of the 3 Stooges to the station of the Family Classics, I’m so fortunate to be a part of Chicago’s Very Own! Ready or not here I go!”

MSNBC's Ronan Farrow Takes Shots at Woody Allen

MSNBC might not put a very good product on the air, but their hires are very good at generating buzz.

You had Alec Baldwin throwing down gay slurs in the middle of New York City, Martin Bashir saying someone needs to take a dump in Sarah Palin's mouth and Melissa Harris-Perry and her guests making fun of Mitt Romney's black grandson.

With Baldwin and Bashir both pushed out at MSNBC, we wondered who was going to step up.

Screen Shot 2014-01-13 at 5.49.43 AM.png

Ding, ding ding...we have a winner with MSNBC's latest hire Ronan Farrow as he lashed out at Woody Allen, his Mom's longtime companion and his own Dad.

Allen was honored at last night's Golden Globes awards for his work over the years.

Needless to say, Farrow's remark fired up Twitter.

People we're tweeting both for and against Farrow's remarks.

And even through he hasn't hit the air with his new show on MSNBC, he's got the bosses cringing.

WTF is up with that place?

Book Claims Bill O'Reilly Terrorized Female Staffer at Fox News

bill_oreilly6.jpg

Roger Ailes might be the 'Loudest Voice in the Room" but Bill O'Reilly would have to come into a close second.

The media industry is obsessing on Gabriel Sherman's new book about Fox News and it's boss Roger Ailes.

Sherman shares a number of stories about Ailes and his ruling of Fox News with and iron first, but sometimes the book branches off to others at FNC.

Like Bill O'Reilly.

In the book, Sherman writes that the top Fox News anchor grew so enraged at a female producer after a botched segment in 2003 that, in order to defuse the situation, “a senior Fox executive” intervened and escorted the crying producer out of News Corp’s Midtown headquarters.

“After one taping, he stormed toward his staff’s cubicles and tore into a young female producer, whom he blamed for botching a segment,” Sherman writes in Loudest Voice, which until today had been under a strict press embargo. “Staffers watched in shock as O’Reilly, easily a foot taller than the woman, started yelling and slamming his fist down on a shelf.”

“He got really close and in her face,” an onlooker told Sherman; “She was scared he was going to hit her,” said another. (The name of the producer is not revealed.)

Eventually O’Reilly vanished, after which “a senior Fox executive was called in and escorted the woman, in tears, out of the building to calm her down.” The famously vindictive anchor never apologized.

Not Exactly a Great Start

As FTVLive told you, CNN Boss Jeff Zucker's latest strategy involves doing less news and more entertainment.

That includes also doing more documentaries.

Last year, CNN aired the doc 'Black Fish' and it did so well in the ratings, that Zucker was giddy enough to want to do more.

Last week, CNN aired their first documentary 2014.

'Sole Survivor', hit the air last Thursday according to Nielsen it finished in last place.

'Sole Survivor' came in third for the night in viewers (701,000)  and the demo (289,000).

Additionally, the doc saw a significant drop compared to the much touted 'Blackfish' which Zucker hung 2013 ratings on (down 48% in P2+ and 39% in A25-54 demo).

Ouch!

Author: Ailes is More Extreme than Glenn Beck

fox-news-roger-ailes.jpg

If you think that Glenn Beck is on the far right, you might want to make some more room to the right of Beck, for Roger Ailes.

At least according to Author Gabriel Sherman and his book on the Fox News boss called 'The Loudest Voice in the Room.'

"Roger Ailes is more extreme than Glenn Beck," Sherman told CNN's "Reliable Sources" host Brian Stelter. "One thing that makes Roger Ailes a genius is that he obscures his true agenda. Glenn Beck is transparent."

"Roger Ailes had a conversation, only months ago, in which he told a politician that if he were president, he had the solution to the immigration problem," the author said. "Roger Ailes' solution would be to send Navy SEAL trainees to our southern border and have them find illegal immigrants crossing into the United States and he would give them direct orders to shoot and kill anyone coming into our country."

Sherman says that he started out with the intention of writing a book about Fox News, but soon realized that Fox News is Roger Ailes.

"I went into this process trying to write a book about Fox News, wanting to write a book about Fox News.  I realized very early on into my reporting that the story is not Fox News. The story is Roger Ailes. The network is a complete expression of his world view."

Sherman said his own political views didn't enter into writing about Ailes.

"I'm a media reporter," he told Stelter. "In media, the biggest story is Fox News. You know, I consider Roger Ailes to be the biggest media story of the last 50 years in American culture. He is an icon."

As for Fox News, they released a statement to FTVLive saying "This latest effort appears to be another example of the agenda-driven cottage industry built on attacking Fox News. The author's failure to secure an interview with the principal subject does not absolve his fact-checking obligations with the network."

The book hits store shelves tomorrow.

The Weather Channel's Push to Stay on DirecTV

The Weather Channel is clogging many people's Twitter feeds with their push to stay on DirecTV.

FTVLive told you that TWC and DirecTV are in a retransmission pissing match and it appears that the satellite company is not scared to drop The Weather Channel from the line-up.

DirecTV and it's parent NBC has been taking the fight to Social Media, to try and win over the viewers and bring them over to their side.

Even Al Roker has been enlisted in the battle:

There is one problem with Roker's tweet and his thought process. He's acting like The Weather Channel's coverage helps save people when nasty storms hit.

Obviously Al doesn't have DirecTV, because he would know that when it starts raining, DirecTV's signal drops and can't be watched.

tony-shannon-nielsen-yianni-630_5171234_ver1.0_640_480.jpg

WPRI in Providence has decided to tack on a 6:30PM newscast starting at the end of the month.

The show will be anchored by Shannon Hegy and Steve Nielsen.

et's go to the obligatory sound bites made up by the Creative Services Department:

“We’re expanding our early evening news coverage to help fit the busy lifestyles of our viewers in Southern New England,” Rezendes said. “Our news team is committed to providing them more local news and weather content when they want it.”

“I’m honored to be a part of this new venture for Eyewitness News,” Hegy said. “People are getting home later and later from work these days and I’m excited along with Steve to bring them news at a time that is convenient.”

“I am excited to take advantage of this new opportunity to bring local news coverage to Rhode Island at an entirely new time,” Nielsen said. “Our new show at 6:30 p.m. on Fox Providence will allow us to continue to bring viewers all of the key stories of the day, while also going more in-depth on the stories people care about. Shannon and I can’t wait to start.”
