WRC Reporter Scott MacFarlane filed a Freedom Of Information Act request U.S. Navy in regaurds to the Navy shipyard shooting in September.

The Navy is trying to stonewall MacFarlane and calling his request a "fishing expedition".

How does MacFarlane know this?

Because the Navy inadvertently sent a memo on how they plan on stonewalling him to MacFarlane.

The Reporter turned around and tweeted part of the memo:

Fox News Boss Roger Ailes sat down with the Hollywood Reporter for a long interview. It is more than likely that Ailes is trying to deflect attention away from the new book coming out that paints him a bad light.

In his interview with THR, Ailes talks about CNN boss Jeff Zucker and his plans for the network:

What do you think of Jeff Zucker saying CNN is now focused on making shows and moving away from newscasts?

I'm actually thrilled. MSNBC has [already] announced they're out of the news business. They have several different hosts, but it's always the same show: Republicans are no good. The NBC News people won't get caught dead on MSNBC. They could have a traffic accident in front of the window, and they wouldn't cover it. For CNN to also throw in the towel and announce they're out of the news business is quite interesting. That means Fox has won the cable news wars. [Zucker] had a big hit with a whale one night [the documentary Blackfish]. I guess he's going to do whales a lot. If I were Discovery, I'd be worried.

Reporter Googles What to do when Her Car Catches on Fire

I will admit, I use Google for a ton of stuff, but I think one Pensacola Reporter might have taken it to the extreme.

WEAR Reporter Christina Leavenworth was on her way to a story, when her car caught on fire.

Now, I don't know about you but if my car catches on fire, I'm going to get the hell out of the car.

Before Leavenworth got out, she Googled what to do.

Really!!!!

It's not often that a simple car fire makes the newscast, but remember this is Pensacola.

Leavenworth filed a report for WEAR and praised the firefighters for doing a great job.

Watch the video and see if you agree. As a bonus you get to see a bunch of snow in Florida. Yep Snow! That's the lead...not the damn car fire!

Leaving CNN for Local TV News

It looks like Chris Lawrence is getting the Zuck out of CNN.

“Chris has proven himself to be a first-class journalist,” WRC News Director Michael Goldrick said.  “We believe his background and experience make him a perfect fit with the NBC4 team. We’re excited to introduce our viewers and Chris to one another.”

Lawrence will be anchoring the weekend versions of News4 at 6 and News4 at 11 and also contribute to other newscasts during the week.

“To work for a station with so much history that’s still proving it is #1 day after day, I couldn’t ask for more,” Lawrence said.  “What an opportunity, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Welcome TVInteract!

Screen-Shot-2013-09-22-at-11.00.37-AM.png

As we start the new year, FTVLive wants to introduce you to a new sponsor of this website.

TVinteract has come on board and we are more than happy to have them.

As you know, FTVLive only allows the best companies that work in and around TV news to advertise on our site. Our goal as a website is to shoot straight with you and that carries over to the sponsors on this site as well.

TVinteract is one of those companies that fit the bill.

In fact, FTVLive wrote about this company long before they became a sponsor. We said it is the one app that every newsroom needs and we still believe that is the case.

If your station uses social media and wants to get better at interacting with viewers, this is THE app you must have.

Screen Shot 2014-01-08 at 9.56.19 AM.png

The person behind TVinteract is Jenni Hogan.

Jenni is a former Anchor and Reporter and has more positive energy in her pinky finger than most people have in their entire body.

Jenni developed what she calls her "dream app" to make it easier for stations to interact with viewers. A viewer can post a tweet and from the time they post it till the time it hits your air could be less than 30 seconds. It really is that easy.

Screen Shot 2014-01-08 at 9.55.32 AM.png

The tweet will be formatted and presented in a very slick way using your station's graphics package and the best of all the TVinteract app does it all. No need for the Art Department or pre-production.

You can put pictures that viewers tweet on the air just moments after they post them to Twitter.

TVinteract is perfect for breaking news stories as well.  It's all formatted inside the app and is ready for air instantly.

It is an amazing app to say the least. The app is so good that Apple approved TVinteract's latest revision in the matter of a few hours. If Apple knows it's a good app, than you can bet that it is.

The uses for this app are endless. Think, now you can bump to breaks using viewer tweets that were sent seconds ago. It's great for all newscasts, morning shows, sports shows and any other time you want to get your viewers involved.

You don't have to be a tech geek or nerd to use the app, it does all the nerdy stuff for you.

FTVLive will be sharing more stories about Jenni and TVinteract in the future. Right now we want welcome TVinteract to the FTVLive family.

If you want to watch a short video of how the app works and get some more understanding, check out their website.

After Merger Gannett Gets Top Heavy

gannett_logo_detail.png

Take a bunch of bosses at Gannet and BELO, merge the two and what do you get?

It appears that you end up with a very top heavy broadcast company.

Gannett has finished their merger with BELO and David Lougee, president of Gannett Broadcasting, has named his new management team.

  • Executive Vice President, Lynn Beall — She will continue in her role as president and general manager of KSDK St. Louis.

  • Executive Vice President, Peter Diaz — He will also have several stations reporting to him.

  • Vice President of Sales, Angela Betasso — She will be centrally located in Dallas where she will also have the newly combined Gannett traffic operations group reporting to her.

  • Vice President of Sales Strategy, Dan Lyons — He will oversee Gannet’s new integrated digital efforts including the broadcasting portion of the newly launched G/O Digital efforts.

  • Senior Vice President of News and Content,  Rob Mennie — He will continue to be integral to content initiatives inside Gannett’s broadcasting division and across all of Gannett.

  • Vice President of News, Michael Valentine — He held this same position at Belo after a successful stint at Belo’s WFAA.

We have to wonder, what is the different about the job of Vice President of News and Content and the job of Vice President of News?

Just asking....

Polar Vortex Brings In Viewers

hell-freezes-over.jpg

While Reporters are outside freezing T-shirts and throwing cups of hot water in the air, normal people are staying in.

And that is good news for the TV stations and companies like Netflix. And the cold weather is really good for local news.

The Milwaukee Journal says that 70,000 extra television homes tuned in to the 5 p.m. newscasts on all four Milwaukee network affiliates Monday, compared with the average number during the November ratings sweeps period.

Viewers presumably tuned in for extreme weather coverage as the windchill neared 50 degrees below zero. Combined 5 p.m. ratings were a 27.9 compared, with a 19.9 in November.

The 5 p.m. newscasts were the most watched of the day.

At 5 p.m., WISN-TV (Channel 12) experienced a four-point jump and WTMJ-TV (Channel 4) a three-point jump.  WTMJ climbed almost five points between 3 and 5 p.m.

A local rating point is the equivalent of 9,100 homes.

Combined ratings for the three local affiliates with a 6 p.m. newscast were a 22.2 compared, with 16.1 in November, or an increase of 55,500 TV homes.

Curiously the 10 p.m. flagship newscasts experienced the smallest viewership increase, to a combined 25.3 rating from a 24 rating in November, or an increase of 11,800 viewers.

And more than 27,000 extra viewers tuned into the 6 a.m. local news show race.

WISN, which won all four time slots, claims the Polar Vortex icy crown.

8 Year Old Girl says Reporter Didn't Touch Her

8 Year Old Girl says Reporter Didn't Touch Her

Showing considerable composure, an 8-year-old girl testified in Hackensack today that former WNYW FOX 5 reporter Charles Leaf never touched her and that molestation allegations she made to a therapist were fed to her by her nanny, whom she called “Weronika.”

“Did anybody ever touch your private parts?” Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor Kenneth Ralph asked the girl, the first witness in Leaf’s sex assault trial, which opened this morning.

“No,” she replied.

“If they did, would you tell us?” he asked.

“Yes,” she said firmly.

“Weronika told me to say those things,” the girl said later.

Leaf wasn’t nearly as composed.

More after the jump.

Throwing the Book at Roger Ailes

Screen Shot 2014-01-08 at 6.41.59 AM.png

The New York Times got an advanced copy of Gabriel Sherman's new biography about Fox News president Roger Ailes "The Loudest Voice in the Room," and we'll go out on a limb here and say it's not one the folks at Fox News want you to read.

The book says that Ailes told fellow Fox News executives point-blank: “I want to elect the next president.”

Former employees cited in the book talked of Ailes’s volatile temper and domineering behavior.

It also seems that Ailes is not all that impressed with his on air talent, privately calling Bill O’Reilly “a book salesman with a TV show” and Brian Kilmeade, a peppy Fox host, “a soccer coach from Long Island.”

But the juiciest tid-bit may have happened when Ailes was at NBC. In one anecdote, a television producer, Randi Harrison, told Mr. Sherman that while negotiating her salary with Ailes at NBC in the 1980s, he offered her an additional $100 each week “if you agree to have sex with me whenever I want.”

$100 bucks to sleep with Roger Ailes?

Ummmmm no thanks!

Meet The Press Falls

081207-gregory-vsml-7a.grid-4x2.jpg

FTVLive predicted long ago when NBC promoted David Gregory to Meet the Press that the once powerful franchise would fall in the ratings.

When the late Tim Russert hosted MTP it was appointment television. With Gregory doing the show, it's an appointment you want to skip.

Politico writes that the show has been on the decline since Gregory took over in 2008. But the most recent numbers are especially troubling.

In the fourth quarter of 2013, "Meet" came in third place for total viewers behind CBS's "Face The Nation" and ABC's "This Week" for the first time since the third quarter of 1992.

But it gets worse: The 2013 fourth-quarter figures mark the lowest total viewers "Meet" has had in a fourth quarter since 1991. And among viewers ages 25 to 54, last quarter marked the lowest ratings in the show's entire history.

NBC insists there are no plans to take Gregory off the show, but as FTVLive has told you, NBC News boss Deborah Turness is taking a hard look at the show.

tay tuned....

News is Easy, Comedy is Hard

Screen Shot 2014-01-08 at 7.00.08 AM.png

The New York Post Page Six says that Brian Williams could be expanding into entertainment.

The NBC anchor is repped by lawyer Robert B. Barnett, whose clients have included Bob Woodward, but sources say Williams — known to do a mean stand-up routine — is being pursued by Hollywood agency CAA to expand his résumé.

“His next move could be comedy or even a late-night show,” said a source. But another source countered that the anchor regularly lunches with CAA’s Richard Lovett, who is a friend.

An NBC rep said: “Brian has never chosen to hire an entertainment agent and isn’t looking for another job. He has been a friend and client of [Bob’s] for years. Brian’s exposure to late-night will remain as a viewer and occasional guest.”
