Sinclair in Retrans Pissing Match in Toledo

Sinclair has pulled WNWO (Toledo) off of Buckeye Cable and the cable company is firing back.

Buckeye Cable is firing back at Sinclair, claiming that they want 10 times more money to put WNWO on their cable system.

Buckeye Cable claims that Sinclair wants more money in Retrans fees than the stations in much larger market Cleveland get.

The cable company took out an ad in the local paper taking a big shot at WNWO's news talent.

Anchors Need to Quit Talking about Santa

How about TV Anchors make a deal to quit talking about Santa all together?

First Megyn Kelly tells us that Santa is real and he is most surely a white guy.

But now WTVD Anchor Anna Laurel tells viewers that Santa is not real and that he's just made up. Which of course is true, but some parents are pissed off and WTVD took to Facebook to say they were sorry.

Maybe it's just time for TV Anchors to shut up about Santa and start just delivering the news.

Rick Sanchez Replacing Glenn Beck

rick-sanchez.jpg

Longtime broadcaster and former Miami, MSNBC, CNN anchor Rick Sanchez has a new shift on South Florida radio.

The flashy and sometimes controversial newsman is joining WIOD's morning block from 10 a.m. to noon weekdays beginning Jan. 6.  For the past year, the Pembroke Pines resident has been helming the 3 to 6 p.m. show.  The syndicated Sean Hannity show takes over Sanchez's former slot. And Glenn Beck, whom Sanchez is replacing in the mornings, moves over to the 6 to 9 p.m. block.

"I am on the air for two hours a day having a conversation with people about things that matter and things that are in the news that affect South Florida, which is fun,'' said Sanchez, 55. "It's smart conversation with friends."

So we're guessing none of those friends are Jewish....right Rick?

No Air Time for Heisman Winner on CBS News

You won't be seeing Florida State Quarterback and Heisman trophy winner James Winston on CBS News.

It seems that either Winston or Florida State put restrictions on the interview barring CBS from asking about the sexual assault allegations.

CBS Anchor Jeff Glor said he was told he could only ask Winston about the national championship game and the Heisman Trophy. Glor declined the Interview.

CBS Morning News also said "no thank you" to Winston and his restrictions.

Lara Logan Coming Back to 60 Minutes Early Next Year

lara_logan.jpg

It appears that the suits at CBS are about ready to let Lara Logan comeback from her time out.

Word is that Logan and Producer Max McClellan, who were put on a leave of absence following their now-retracted report on Benghazi, are set to return to the program early next year.

Politico writes that Logan and her producer, who had unfinished projects in the works when they left in November, have started booking camera crews for news packages, network sources said. Their return could come as early as next month.

Kevin Tedesco, the spokesperson for "60 Minutes," said a specific return date had not been scheduled.

“Lara Logan’s return has not been scheduled," he wrote in a statement. "Beyond that, we do not comment on speculation.”

Wait a minute! Wasn't it "speculation" that caused this whole mess to begin with. So while CBS "won't comment on speculation" they're not against airing it.

Hoda Talks About First Time Anchoring

20131215_zaf_f84_015.jpg

Hoda Kotb relived one of her no so better moments anchoring the news.

Kotb tells Page Six “The first time I filled in anchoring I was totally paranoid and scared . . . There was an anchorwoman who was . . . off that day and I happened to show up for work in a blazer. The prompter — I’ll never forget it — said ‘Good evening, I’m Hoda Kotb. Ann Martin is off tonight,’ and they hit the red light and they cued me and I looked in the camera and I said, ‘Good evening, I’m Ann Martin.’ Ann Martin was a legend in that town. I still remember it in slow motion.”

Martin, on whom Anchorman 2's Christina Applegate’s character is said to be based, was LA’s KABC-TV’s anchor from the early 1980s to 1994, before moving to KCBS. Kotb said, “It was like the worst newscast in the history of the world . . . It was a disaster . . . It was like saying, ‘I’m Oprah,’ and people were like, ‘No you’re not.’ ”

The worst newscast in the world?

I don't think so Hoda.

Note: As a number of you pointed out the NY Post Page Six story is wrong. The Ann Martin Hoda Kotb was talking about is not the Ann Martin from. LA. It was Ann Martin from small market station WXVT.

And Then She was Gone

When a station hires a new on air talent, they love to tout the hire and brag about he/she is the next best thing since the last next best thing.

But, when that talent leaves, all you hear from the station is crickets.

Take Reporter Shannon Butler of WOFL in Orlando.

Butler joined the station back in 2004 and let at the end of November. Yesterday, the station got around to confirming that she was no longer at WOFL. BTW her bio is still posted on the station's website.

You just gots to love the the communications business.

Anchorman 2 Sucks!

anchorman-2-legend-continues.jpg

Bad news for all of you that were looking forward to seeing the movie Anchorman 2.

According to NY Daily News movie review....it sucks.

The paper writes that "Anchorman 2" joins "Caddyshack II," "Airplane II," "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo" and "Arthur 2: On the Rocks" on the list of unnecessary sequels. Like the bloated channels it parodies, the movie stretches to find something to say, then settles for stupid.

Ouch!

Buffalo Anchor on the DL

Scott-Levin.jpg

WGRZ Anchor Scott Levin has been off the anchor desk since the November book ended and he doesn't plan on coming back till next year.

Levin underwent "back/spine surgery" about two weeks ago.

Levin confirmed that he had "back/spine surgery." His note illustrated that he hasn't lost his sense of humor.

"Making progress each day, but now that I'm AARP eligible (over 50), stamina is taking longer to return than I thought," wrote Levin on Facebbok. "I plan to be back at work after New Year's when I get clearance from my doctor. Looking forward to getting back to work!"

Levin turned 50 in September, when he signed a new long-term deal with Channel 2. He remains the youngest lead male news anchor in the market.

In a telephone interview after a doctor's appointment this morning, Levin said he suffered an herniated disc after a car accident on Halloween, which was the first night of the November sweeps.

"I decided I'll take one for the Gipper," said Levin in explaining why he delayed surgery until after the sweeps ended. "I don't know how I got through November. It's a blur to me."

Levin added that he was given a shot to reduce the swelling and relieve some of the pain in order to get through the sweeps, but still experienced pain standing and sitting.

His target date for his return is Monday, Jan. 6. His doctor told him today not to rush things.

"He told me I had a whopper of a herniation," said Levin. "He said, 'you really have got to take it easy.'"

Levin might not be recognizable today to some of Channel 2's viewers.

"I grew a beard and I haven't had to use hair gel," he cracked.

Chicago Station Looks to the Future Forecast

ABC-7-weather.jpg

WLS in Chicago is trying to forecast the future in their weather department.

Robert Feder writes that after 30 years at WLS-Channel 7, chief meteorologist Jerry Taft remains as solid as ever on Chicago’s top-rated 10 o’clock newscast. At age 70, the former U.S. Air Force combat pilot shows no signs of cutting back.

But whenever that rainy day comes, bosses of the ABC-owned station want to be ready with more than just an umbrella. So they’re turning to a select group of Chicago area viewers to aid in formulating a long-range weather plan.

One of the participants in the ongoing research study shared with me a copy of the online survey, which includes such questions as: “If Jerry Taft were no longer one of the weathercasters on ABC 7 News – WLS, how much more or less often would you watch the local news on ABC 7 News – WLS?”

Another question asks: “If Tracy Butler were no longer one of the weathercasters on ABC 7 News – WLS, how much more or less often would you watch the local news on ABC 7 News – WLS between 4:30 a.m. and 7 a.m.?”

In addition to focusing on Taft and Butler, the survey also inquired about ABC 7 meteorologists Mike Caplan and Phil Schwarz, and asked participants to compare and contrast all four of them against several of their counterparts in the market.

John Idler, president and general manager of ABC 7, confirmed that the station had commissioned SmithGeiger market research and consulting firm to conduct the survey. It is believed to involve between 500 and 1,000 participants.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve our product and serve our viewers,” Idler told me Monday. “It’s standard to ask multidimensional questions so we can fully understand our viewers’ affinity for the way we keep them informed.”

Fox on Top for 2013, CNN Struggles

Fox on Top for 2013, CNN Struggles

White Santa isn't the only one watching Fox News, a bunch of other people are as well.

Fox News will end 2013, just like the have for years before as the number one watched cable news channel. FNC ends the year drawing more viewers than the combined averages of CNN,MSNBC and HLN.

It was a down year in terms of overall audience, as every newsie but HLN showed primetime declines from their Presidential Election-driven tallies of 2012.

Of course, HLN, the only cable net to show a ratings gain is being blown up by CNN President Jeff Zucker.

Variety reports that according to Nielsen data through Dec. 8, Fox News Channel averaged 1.774 million viewers in primetime (down 13% from 2012) and 297,000 adults 25-54 (down 30%). It was followed by MSNBC with 645,000 viewers and 203,000 adults 25-54 (down 29% in both); CNN with 578,000 (down 15%) and 187,000 adults 25-54 (down 16%); and HLN with 403,000 total viewer (up 21%) and 142,000 in the demo (up 27%).

See CNN's struggles after the bounce.

FIRST on FTVLive! Wichita F-Bomb Anchor is Sacked!

Just two days after KSNW Anchor Justin Kraemer threw down the F-bomb at the end of Saturday night's newscast, his bio has going missing from the KSNW website.

Kraemer wrapped up the newscast and could be heard saying "let's get the fuck out of here", as the station's credits rolled.

Kraemer had been at the station since 2008 and this was his second go around at KSNW. He worked at the station in the late 90's through 2001.

Now it appears the station has gotten Kreamer the fuck out of there.

Here's the video that was posted on FTVLive over the Weekend and by just about everyone else Today.

Ohio News Director Died This Afternoon

Screen Shot 2013-12-16 at 6.39.25 PM.png

WKBN and WYTV News Director Gary Coursen lost his battle with cancer this afternoon. He was just 55 years old.

Coursen began his career at WKBN TV in 1979 as a news photographer after graduating from Hubbard High School and Youngstown State University. For 25 years, the videotape Coursen shot graced TVs throughout Youngstown.  He was on the scene when the steel mills shutdown, for Jim Traficant's first trial, and the tornado of 1985.

Coursen later became WKBN's chief photographer and in 2003 was named news director. Coursen was a quiet leader. He was not a micro-manager, though everyone in the news department knew he was in charge.

Coursen focused his entire 34-year career on the Youngstown market. One of his greatest professional achievements was as architect of the 2007 merger of the WKBN and WYTV news departments. He was proud of how it all came together. When he spoke of it right after the merger, he said it was a challenge but that we would have “a news machine going here in the Youngstown market. The viewers should come out of this a winner.”

This past summer, Coursen was diagnosed with cancer that was centered around his nasal area and had moved into his brain. There were chemo-therapy and radiation treatments and then last Thursday an operation to remove the cancer. First deemed a success, there were complications and he went into a deep coma over the weekend.

Coursen died with his family at his side.
