Heeeee's Baaaaaaack.....

Bolaris600.jpg

Last time we heard from out of work Playboy Weatherman John Bolaris, he was saying that he was leaving Philly and putting it in his rearview mirror.

That was back in the Spring.

So, color us surprised when we logged onto to Philly.com and saw that Bolaris had written a article for the website about the upcoming Winter weather for....yep you guessed it....Philadelphia.

Bolaris put on his weatherman suit (which we hope he didn't poop in) and gave his outlook for the Winter in the City of Brotherly love.

Bolaris says that "From my analysis, the winter of 2013-2014 is about to change dramatically. Not so much through the remainder of 2013, but the New Year will bring the onslaught of a wicked second half."

He adds that his estimated snow total for the winter of 2013-2014 in Philly is 30 to 40 inches.

Of course snow is a lot like sex for women...... you don't know how many inches your going to get, or how long it will last?

Just ask the Eastern European babes ....right John?

Sorry Eric....

TV Critic Eric Deggans who just left his gig at the Tampa Bay Times for a job at NPR, didn't get the job he really wanted.

Even after just starting his new job, word is that Deggans was pitching hard for the job at CNN and the new host of Reliable Sources.

He didn't get it.

CNN has hired NY Times TV Critic Brian Stelter.

Deggans seems a bit upset in his tweet:

Screen Shot 2013-11-12 at 9.01.27 AM.png

Deggans has written a number of stories over the years talking networks to task (well deserved if you ask us) for lack of diversity in their hiring practices. .

No word yet if he'll mention that CNN went with the white guy.

Bottom line....whether CNN hired Stelter or Deggans, either or would have been a upgrade from Howard Kurtz.

Just saying....

Go Ahead... Make My Sweeps

Clint Eastwood and his wife Dina have been in the news a lot lately as the couple is going through a nasty divorce.

Well, it appears that Dina has gone back to her job reporting the news as well.

Dina used to anchor the news at KSBW in Monterey and now she is returning to her old station.   In a well times Sweeps stunt, Clint Eastwood's soon to be ex hit the air last night to anchor the 5PM newscast at KSBW.

News Director, Lawton Dodd says that Dina will be anchoring daily for the next 2 weeks (SWEEPS!) and will come back from time to time (like in other ratings books).

Dina was an anchor between 1991 and 1996 at the station. She met Clint in 1992, when she interviewed him for the newscast.

Dina filed for divorce last month.

There are reports Clint had an iron-clad prenup so ... Dina might be needing that extra Anchor money.

FTVLive FIRST told you back on June 19th that KTXL (Sacramento) had parted ways with News Director Brandon Mercer.

Well, Mercer has landed a new gig just down the road in San Francisco.

Mercer broke the news of his new job on his Facebook page:

I first worked at a CBS affiliate in 1997, and the network promo that season says it best, “CBS: Welcome Home.”

I’m thrilled to be heading back to the San Francisco Bay Area and back to CBS as Director of Digital Content and social media for KPIX-TV, KBCW-TV, KCBS Radio, LIVE 105 FM, Alice@97.3 / RadioAlice.com, and 99.7 [Now!].

The caliber of these teams and the quality of content they create for these brands is the absolute highest. I couldn't imagine an opportunity more fulfilling. The San Francisco Bay Area is a vibrant, diverse, and idea-driven media market, and my family and I are thrilled to be a part of it.

Suck It Syracuse

news-13-1111-brandolinobabich.png

WSYR in Syracuse is going to be losing two of the three primary on-air talent for the station's “The Morning News.”

The top rated show is going to lose co-anchor Tanja Babich and meteorologist Chris Brandolino.

Both have landed new gigs outside of Central New York.  Babich will be gone by the end of this month, and Brandolino will wrap up his three-year stay with channel 9 on New Year’s Eve.

News Director Rob Cartwright confirmed the upcoming departures saying that Babich is leaving after the book. So far she has yet said where she is headed.

Brandolino will finish out the year at NewsChannel 9 before moving to the southern hemisphere for the second time.  Cartwright said Brandolino has accepted an opportunity with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in Auckland, New Zealand.  Brandolino’s last day on NewsChannel 9 will be December 31.

Bounced ATL Sports Anchor to Land in Dallas

Rawlings_240X180.jpg

Gay Rawlings was kicked to the curb at WGCL in Atlanta, but has now landed a new gig in Dallas.

At the end of the month, Rawlings is joining KTVT as a Sports Anchor.

“Guy’s passion for sports is evident in everything he does,” said CBS 11 and TXA 21 President and General Manager Gary Schneider. “He will be a great fit with our already strong sports team.”

(An earlier report we had KTVT in Houston. The station did move there late last night, but they have since moved the station back to Dallas after about an hour. We have corrected the story to show that).

CNN Sports Show Sinks in the Ratings

Screen Shot 2013-11-12 at 6.32.44 AM.png

CNN's experiment of putting a sports show on the news network is not off to a very promising start.

"Unguarded" hosted by Rachel Nichols hit the air on October 25th and the ratings were not very good. Only 228,000 people watched the debut of the show.

So, we decided to check back for week 2 and see if the show improved in the ratings?

Nope...in fact in week 2 the Unguarded slide 54% to just 133,000 viewers.

How about the demos?

Not good.  The 10:30-11 PM show had a very weak 41,000 viewers in the news demo which was down 55% since the first show.

Ouch!  I hope CNN has some more whale shows in the can.

CNN this/close to Hiring (Hired) Brian Stelter (Updated)

la-et-ct-cnn-wooing-new-york-times-media-repor-002.jpeg

It appears that NY Times TV Crtic Brian Stelter, thinks the grass might be greener on the other side.

Word is that CNN is very close to hiring  Stelter at the cable news network.

The LA Times says that Stelter, who has covered the television news and entertainment industry for the New York Times since 2007, would do the same for the cable news channel and is also expected to host the Sunday morning media magazine show "Reliable Sources," a position that has been vacant since Howard Kurtz left for Fox News earlier this year. Stelter has already guest-hosted the show a few times.

A CNN spokeswoman declined to comment, and a New York Times spokeswoman couldn't be reached for comment. However, two sources close to the situation, who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, confirmed the talks. An announcement of Stelter's hiring could come as early as this week.

Stelter couldn't be reached for comment.

Update: Word now comes that CNN had in fact hired Stelter, he leaves the NYT this month.  He'll host Reliable Sources.

Newsgirls Don't Cry

web1_melissa-mccarthy_3.jpg

Former KTNV (Las Vegas) reporter and anchor Melissa McCarty, who left Sin City six years ago to work in the Los Angeles market, has written a book titled “News Girls Don’t Cry.”

They may not cry, but they might do some gold digging.

The Las Vegas Review Journal says that McCarty dishes some doozies about her demons and her personal life. Her chapter on Las Vegas mentions an unnamed mogul she dated and how she watched him lose $250,000 one night at blackjack.

One night at a Hollywood club, she was swept off her feet by a man she refers to as Mr. Wonderful-the athlete. After an argument-filled courtship, he called it off, saying he needed to focus on his career. He went on to “great success,” she said. “In fact he was an overnight sensation.”

McCarty  is now working for Larry King on his new network ORA-TV as a fill-in host on the news-breaking segment.

WTAE in Pittsburgh unveiled their new news chopper which they call Sky 4 (how original).

The station says that the new chopper is bigger, with a better camera and even has heating and air conditioning (oh boy!).

If you want to watch the video, you can do so at WTAE's website....since the station does not allow the embedding of video on other sites (LAME).

Sam Donaldson Found Not Guilty on DUI Charges

bilde.jpeg

Longtime ABC Newsman Sam Donaldson was busted for drunk driving late last year.

His case finally went to trial and Donaldson was found not guilty on Friday.

When Donaldson was acquitted of a DUI charge, he stood and strode over to the Lewes police officer who’d arrested him last December during a traffic stop.

“You did your duty as you saw fit,” Donaldson, 79, who has interviewed U.S. presidents and world leaders as a reporter and anchor for ABC News since 1967, solemnly told Pfc. Katie Couchman. “I bear no animus toward you whatsoever.”

Donaldson was acquitted of driving under the influence and making an improper lane change in a Court of Common Pleas trial that lasted for more than five hours on Friday.

Judge Rosemary B. Beauregard ruled that police hadn’t established probable cause to arrest and charge him after a Dec. 1 traffic stop, when Couchman pulled over the gray Ford Expedition Donaldson was driving west along Savannah Road.

In her testimony, Couchman said she saw Donaldson’s car driving on the shoulder of the road, weaving from one side of the shoulder to the other. When he rolled down his window and spoke to her, she smelled alcohol, she testified, and she saw an opened but re-corked wine bottle near the passenger’s seat.

According to her testimony, Donaldson told her his girlfriend, who lives in the area, had broken her hip that day as they rode bikes, and that he was going to visit her at Beebe Medical Center.

He’d had dinner at The Buttery, a swank Second Street eatery, and was bringing his girlfriend the leftovers. While at the restaurant, he said he’d had “a few glasses of wine,” Couchman testified. In verbal and physical sobriety tests, Couchman said, Donaldson did poorly, miscounting a number series and failing to stand on one leg as instructed.

When Donaldson’s attorney, Eric Mooney, questioned Couchman, he noted that Delaware’s police academy training on giving sobriety tests like walking in a straight line or standing on one leg says they are not intended to be given to people older than 65, since they may have inherent balance problems.

GMA Anchor Battling Breast Cancer

amyrobach1.jpg

Good Morning America Anchor Amy Robach underwent a mammogram live on the air back in October.

It was basically another stunt to drive and help bring ratings.

But, in this case the stunt might have helped save her life.

After her live mammogram, Robach found out she had breast cancer. Now the GMA Anchor is set to have a double mastectomy on Thursday.

"The doctors told me bluntly: “That mammogram just saved your life,”" Robach says.

Screen Shot 2013-11-11 at 8.30.36 AM.png

Some could argue that she could have done all this in the privacy of her own Doctor's office.

But, this is a business driven by ratings and in this case the stunt might just have been worth it.

Of course, since we are in the important November ratings, expect more coverage of Robach's surgery and recovery in the coming weeks.

Here's Robach's blog post about her ordeal so far.
