The Today Show Lands Dick

dick_cheney.jpg

NBC's Savannah Guthrie has landed the first live interview with Dick... and we're not talking about Bill O'Reilly.

Guthrie will interview former Vice President Dick Cheney for his new book, “Heart: An American Medical Odyssey.”

The interview is expected to air on Monday's Today Show.

Cheney's book hits store shelves on Tuesday and chronicles his 35-year battle with heart disease

Fox News Reports Congressman is Dead..He was Not

In an effort to be first, Fox News killed off Rep. Bill Young (R-Fla.) Today.

Fox News Anchor Gretchen Carlson broke in with a Fox News Alert to report that the Congressman had died.

Fox News beat all the other networks on the story, mainly because Young was in fact not dead.

He is "gravely ill" according to his family.

Here's the video thanks to Politico:

NBC's Luke Russert also tweeted out that Young had died. But then again, it's Luke Russert. So there you go.

People Have Said FTVLive Was Wrong Before

i_told_you_so_stephen_colbert.gif

While Piers Morgan says FTVLive's report on him is not true and we are just a "mad blogger",  we thought we would use Google's archive search and look back.

Here are some of the other stories FTVLive reported that many said weren't true:

  • FTVLive reported back in 2008 that the Today Show was going to hire Kathie Lee Gifford for the last hour of Today. At the time TVNewser wrote "An insider adds, it’s not a done deal and that “it could go either way.”"

I forget, how did that one turn out? Oh that's right, Kathie Lee was hired at the Today Show.

  • In 2006, FTVLive reported that Both Tucker Carlson and Rita Cosby's shows on MSNBC were going to get canceled. A number of media outlets claimed our report was wrong.

Hmmmm? I can't seem to find either one of those shows on the MSNBC schedule. I wonder what happened?

  • Here's a quote from TVNewser again in 2006 " “ABC has made an offer to WABC’s Sam Champion to do weather on Good Morning America,” sources tell FTVLive. “We expect that ABC will make the Champion announcement very soon. Sources say they have to cross the ‘T’s’ and dot the ‘i’s’ on the contract before the official word will come down.”

We wonder, did anything ever come of that tip? Why yes it did. Sam is now the Champion at GMA.

  • Back in 2007, TVNewser again wrote this "This morning FTVLive reports that Brown is moving to CNN and taking Paula Zahn‘s spot. As the site puts it: “CNN maybe soon asking ‘What can Brown do for them?’” A couple of e-mailers say they’re hearing similar talk about Campbell and CNN. But “she is meant for a broadcast news program,” one observer thinks. A few days ago, a tipster mentioned rumors that she could head to ABC or CBS’ Early Show."

Ummmm...Yep FTVLive nailed that one as well. Brown went to CNN replaced Paula Zahan and then she got replaced (gulp...Piers).

  • Then there's this item from the Washington Post "Bill Hemmer, 40, a 10-year CNN veteran who shares morning anchor duties with Soledad O'Brien, did not sound happy that the Web site FTVLive reported last night that he is being replaced on "American Morning." "So CNN leaked word; that's the tactic they've chosen," he said.

I could bore you with a bunch of others, but I think you get the idea. But, before I wrap this up let's go to the granddaddy of them all.

  • From the New York Post  " NBC denied a report today on Web site FTVLive.com that Leno’s show was about to be cancelled because of low ratings but it admitted that the show is creating problems for station affiliates. NBC maintains that Leno’s show, which has appeared each weeknight at 10 p.m. since last fall, is generating ratings that are in line with what it guaranteed advertisers. But the show has proven to be a dismal lead-in for the late local news."

Can't remember how that one turned out...can you?

The Mad Blogger's Thoughts on Piers Morgan's Contract

Piers-Morgan.jpg

FTVLive told you that earlier Piers Morgan went on Howard Stern's radio show and called me a "mad blogger" and denied that our report on him was not true.

Morgan told Stern that FTVLive's report was wrong and that he recently signed a one year extension to his contract. Which was exactly what FTVLive said in our original story

But, since Piers brought it up, let's talk about his contract.

As both Piers and FTVLive have said, CNN did extend his contract, for one year.

Back in 2010, another CNN anchor's contract was coming up and the network also offered the anchor an extension. Anderson Cooper extended his contract with CNN for "years to come."

Jim Walton, CNN Worldwide President at the time said “I am pleased that Anderson Cooper has extended his relationship with CNN and will be with us for years to come.”

Yet, CNN only gave Piers a lousy one year.

Sources tell FTVLive that Morgan's agent John Ferriter has tried shopping Morgan to other TV and cable news outlets. We hear that he hasn't even got a nibble.

So, Ferriter is now doing his best to get CNN and Jeff Zucker to keep Piers on, even if it's not in his original time slot or maybe not even in prime time. Which again, is exactly what we said in our original story.

Piers you have to ask yourself, if CNN was so sold on you, don't you think they would have offered you more than a year on your contract?

But hey, you don't have to listen to me...I'm just a mad blogger.

Shutdown Was Ratings Winner for Cable News

110210_oreilly_328_ap.jpg

The idiots in Washington finally ended the ego induced Government Shutdown and now the cable news channels will have to go back to covering George Zimmerman's latest antics.

But, while the shutdown screwed with many American's lives, it was a ratings boom for the cable news outlets.

Fox News, showed some huge ratings increases during the shutdown and no one more so than Bill O'Reilly, or as Piers Morgan calls him, Dick.

On Tuesday night, with the shutdown still going and the debt ceiling about to come crashing down, O'Reilly's show The O’Reilly Factor pulled some huge numbers.

3.1 million viewers tuned into O'Reilly's show and he pulled his 639,000 in the demos. It was his biggest demo since February

In fact more people tuned into O'Reilly than watched Fox’s The Mindy Project or ABC's Scandal.

Not bad for a Dick...right Piers?

Cops Investigating Philly Sportscaster

Police now confirm they are investigating a Philadelphia sportscaster Don Tollefson.

This all comes after after questions surfaced about his charity and Eagles tickets promised to people who made donations. Those people claimed they never got the tickets.

Now, Tollefson has come up with an excuse as to why this happened.

Here's the story from WCAU in Philly:

No Experience? No Problem

50dca8f6e2d43.preview-300.jpg

So you didn't go to school for it and you have no experience, but you want to be a TV Anchor?

No problem.

You just have to be Miss South Carolina.

Bree Boyce, the former Miss South Carolina, may have dreamed of the stage, but perhaps her latest job was the one she was destined for.

Boyce will join the 10 o’clock news team at WACH, the Fox affiliate out of Columbia, on Oct. 25.

To hear the former FMU theater major tell it, becoming a news anchor might have been kismet.

“When I was little, I would pretend that I was a newscaster,” Boyce said. “I was named after an anchor; her name was Bree (Walker, known for her work in California in the 1980s and 90s). My grandma named me after her, so maybe it was a foreshadowing.”

It concludes what has been a whirlwind six months for Boyce. She has continued to make appearances promoting her healthy eating and still managed to find time to land her dream role as Eponine in the acclaimed production of “Les Miserables” at the Florence Little Theatre.

Boyce said she is excited for the new opportunity.

“It is kind of surreal and weird at the same time because I didn’t go to school for this,” she said.

“I was there for an interview and the next thing I know I was offered a job as an anchor,” Boyce said. “It has been kind of a fast-paced thing but I am very excited. I have been doing all kinds of training before I officially start.”

Boyce will be joining a previously all-male news team with anchor Darryl Hood, reporter Brian McConchie and meteorologist Henry Rothenberg.

WACH News Director Kevin Pazdernik said the station is looking forward to Boyce joining the news team.

“Not only will she (Boyce) add a fresh face, but she’ll also bring her own unique perspective to the newscast,” Pazdernik said. “South Carolinians are very familiar with Bree’s story of personal success and as an anchor/reporter, she will look to highlight similar stories of achievement in our community.”

New ND Named in Rochester

WROC (Rochester, NY) has bumped up Executive Producer Constance Howard to the station's new News Director.

Howard, 58, has worked as a news director in Baltimore, Birmingham and Raleigh. She was promoted on Monday.

"It's a great honor. I'm excited about it. I'm excited that Nexstar (Broadcasting Group) believed in my abilities enough to give me this assignment," Howard said.

Howard said she wants to provide support for her staff so they can tell good stories and provide context for viewers, a departure from current news trends toward immediacy and police-blotter style reporting.

"I'm looking for quality, not quantity," she told her staff Wednesday.

Howard's previous jobs have included working in real estate for several years in Baltimore, and as an executive producer or assistant news director in New York City, Dallas and Pittsburgh. In the late 1970s she worked briefly as a reporter for WROC.

She has been at the station just over a year.

Working for TV and The Web

Working for TV and The Web

Working in TV News has taken a dramatic change with the Internet.

No longer are people working at a TV station, just doing stuff for on air. They are also working on the station's website and posting to social media.

WAFB's (Baton Rouge) 9 News This Morning co-host Matt Williams is not merely a journalist. He is a one-man marketing department promoting both the Matt Williams brand and WAFB.

"It's so different from in the past," says Williams, who got into local TV news in the mid-1990s, when the Internet was in its infancy and social media was nonexistent. "If someone showed up from the year 2000, they wouldn't know what to make of it."

"Some years ago, people would do a story for air, and then they would post it to the website," says WBRZ-TV news director Chuck Bark. "That's no longer good enough. Now they should be posting a story about what they're going to do, then updating it as they're covering it, and then doing something about it after it's over."

 More after the hop.

AMJ Hired at Ohio Station

WHIO-TV_Logo.png

Yesterday FTVLive told you that WHIO in Dayton has seen morale drop as The Dayton Daily News newspaper has taken over running the TV station.

Right on cue, this email was sent out to the staff yesterday about a new hire.

Join me in welcoming Brian Bondus to Springfield today.

Brian will be our newest AMJ, or all-media journalist. He will cover Champaign and Logan counties, helping WHIO with ratings points. Recent research said we could gain market share with some more work there.

As he works to pick up Champaign County, Matt Sanctis will continue to transition to the jobs and economy beat that he has been helping with lately, making that his key focus.

Brian is a graduate of the University of Missouri who has lived in the Indianapolis area.

He will begin here in training that will focus on the print side first before we get him set up for the TV side, which is where most of his experience has been.

Can Couric's Talk Show Make it to a 3rd Season?

131015mag-katie-couric1_300x206.jpg

Many have written off 'Katie' and say that it is done after this year.

But, TV Guide says the show hosted by Katie Couric does have a chance to make it to a 3rd season.

Syndication executives who hear the complaints of unhappy TV station owners say that Katie is a goner.

But others say that Couric's show will get to a third year if Disney/ABC and Couric agree to take less money from the stations that carry it (she currently earns $10 million a year).

Disney/ABC wants to see if it can make a Couric renewal work financially, something that will have to be determined in a matter of weeks. "The sales team is currently in the marketplace having conversations with our station partners," the company says in a statement to TV Guide Magazine. "The viewer response has been great, and we've been very pleased with the creative changes and direction." According to a Disney/ABC insider, "It can go either way."

People close to Couric say money is less important to her than being happy with the final product. After some behind-the-scenes turmoil, including several executive producer changes, she is said to be pleased with the show's current mix of celebrity interviews, how-to info and serious conversation on more topical issues. But she hasn't decided if she wants to stick with the series; Couric has held conversations with Yahoo! about an online show, but that could be done as a supplement to her TV work.

Of course if Couric doesn't make it to a third season.

She always has other options.

New Anchor in Austin

ErickaMiller.jpg

KEYE in Austin has hired Ericka Miller as their new weekend anchor and reporter.

Miller came from WXII 12 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where she worked as a weekend news and sports anchor since 2011. She left WXII in May.

According to her bio, Miller started out at KAAL-TV in Rochester, Minnesota where she worked for six years - eventually becoming the main anchor.

She's from Iowa but attended the University of Miami.

Miller replaces Katherine Stolp who left KEYE after six years to work for an Austin semiconductor company.

Piers Morgan Calls FTVLive a "Mad Blogger"

Screen Shot 2013-10-16 at 5.02.28 PM.png

Piers Morgan went on Howard Stern's radio show Today and took shots at two of the biggest people in Media..... Bill O'Reilly and Me (FTVLive).

Morgan told some story about how Bill O'Reilly blew him off and said that O'Reilly was "a dick."

He was then asked about the FTVLive report that CNN was looking to replace him at 9PM.

FTVLive reported that Morgan had signed a one year extension to his contract and that CNN was "actively looking for a replacement for Piers Morgan."

Morgan told Stern that FTVLive's report was wrong and that he recently signed a one year extension to his contract. Ummmmm....sorry Piers, but I believe that is exactly what we reported.

Morgan then referred to me as a "mad blogger." Since Morgan is British, I'm not sure what his translation of "Mad blogger" means? I know people say that Tiger Woods has "mad golf skills" which means that Tiger is very good at his job of a PGA Tour player.

So, will take it as Piers was complimenting us and for that we thank him.

But then Morgan told Howard Stern he had never heard of FTVLive. Yet, for some reason he knows we are "mad." Interesting...to say the least.

Piers might want to ask his boss Jeff Zucker about FTVLive, we are 100% positive he's heard of us.

Or better yet Piers, call over to gang at Fox News,  the network that cleans the floor with you every night in the ratings.

They've heard of FTVLive. Hell... Greta even blogs about this site.

Piers you can ask Hoda and Kathie Lee about FTVLive. Or Robin Meade over at your sister HLN.

Finally, FTVLive's story was that Piers Morgan signed a contract extension and that Jeff Zucker is looking to replace him in the 9PM slot. We also said that Morgan might stay on at CNN but more than likely it will be outside prime time.

We stand behind that story and we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out.

FTVLive has a long history of breaking stories and our batting average is pretty damn high when we do.

We'll just have to wait and see if this swing was a hit or a miss?

But, so far we like the pitch.

And we don't think Bill O'Reilly is a dick.

Sounds like you are the one that's "mad" Piers.

Our pissing match with Piers is also playing out (love the alliteration) is also playing out over at Jim Romenesko's site.

OK...Everyone Act Surprised Now

ronan1.jpg

MSNBC has announced that Ronan Farrow is joining cable news network that doesn't like to cover news.

MSNBC says Farrow will anchor a Monday-Friday program for the network.

As FTVLive told you, MSNBC is hoping that Farrow will be their answer to Anderson Cooper.

Farrow was in the news lately when his Mom, Mia Farrow said that it's possible that Ronan's Dad is Frank Sinatra and not Woody Allen.
