Salt Lake GM's Long Answer

Salt Lake GM's Long Answer

It must be nice to be Richard Doutre Jones the GM of KTVX in Salt Lake City. This guy seems to have a lot of time on his hands.

A viewer named "Char" asked a simple question using a form on the station's website.

Char asked "Wat happened to kylee conway..she is the only reason we watched your show...duh!!!"

She got a reply email from KTVX GM  Doutre Jones that was almost 800 words long!

Jones not only told her that Conway is no longer with the station, but he updates her on where Conway is in the world and about her replacement.

He then continues his long response by talking about a new hire that will be joining the station, a newspaper guy that they have added, how great the weatherman is, a 5 year old phenomenon that will help with weather and another 4 or 5 other changes the station made.

All because a viewer wanted to know where her favorite anchor went?

Talk about overkill.

The GM's long email he sent to the viewer after the jump.

Anchor Shift in Sin City

Some Anchor changes are going down at one Sin City station.

In the Fall, KSNV has decided to tack on a one-hour 7 p.m. newscast. The new newscast will be anchored by Jim Snyder and Jessica Moore. It is expected to hit the air Sept. 16th.

The station is also shuffling the anchor deck.

The 11 o'clock newscast will now be anchored by relative newcomers Reed Cowan and McKenzie Warren.

Cowan had been anchoring the 4PM newscast. He   worked in Miami and Salt Lake City markets before joining KSNV more than a year ago. He also has been a weeknight reporter at the station.

More on the anchor switch after the bounce.

Young People Ain't Watching TV

Screen Shot 2013-06-04 at 1.41.53 PM.png

Here is a chart that has to scare the hell out of cable executives and do a fairly good job of shaking up anyone that works in TV.

The chart shows that the people "cutting the cord" is growing quickly and it is going at hyper speed for the young people.

In 2007, the number of "Zero-TV" households was around 2 million. It has since grown to more than 5 million, according to a recent Nielsen report.

Nielsen defines "Zero-TV" households as those that don't fit into its definition of a TV household. It doesn't mean that those households don't have traditional TV sets, but it's just that the majority of them get their content from computers, tablets, and smartphones. In short, it means they're not paying for cable.

But here's the real kicker: nearly half of these "Zero-TV" households are under the age of 35, marking a clear trend in our viewing habits.

WTF?!....I didn't Learn a Damn Thing Here

Jonathan Carlson investigative Reporter & Anchor for WNCN in Raleigh broke a big "Exclusive" story on Twitter.

The story was about the hiring of a superintendent of the Wake County Public School System.

So let's get right to Carlson's huge "exclusive":

Screen Shot 2013-06-04 at 2.16.52 PM.png

WTF?! So the exclusive news is..... there is no news. That would be like us postings this on Twitter: "EXCLUSIVE: The winner of the 2016 Presidential Race is still up in the air."

But wait, Carlson followed up that "exclusive" with some major breaking news on the story:

Screen Shot 2013-06-04 at 2.17.12 PM.png

So either it is or is not happening. Wow! This is huge!

Carlson was not going to give you just those two little tid-bits and not give you some more exclusive details to the story:

So to sum up this big story, The appointment of a new superintendent is still up in the air, it may or may not happen Today and officials aren't saying anything.

So in other words, we know nothing more than we did before we read his Tweets. That's 2 minutes of your life you ain't ever getting back.

Out the Door in Austin

Chris-Willis-MAKERS.jpg

KXAN has cut ties with Investigative reporter Chris Willis.

Why?

No one's talking ( I love the communications business...I really do)

Willis bio has been stripped from the station's website.  Both general manager Eric Lassberg and news director Chad Cross are not responding to inquiries from those trying to find out what happened.

Willis who has been at KXAN since 1999 was moved from morning anchor to chief investigative reporter about two years ago.

The station has heavily promoted Willis and his investigations and brands itself as the city's "In-Depth. Investigative." station.

But, whatever you do, don't investigate why the station parted ways with their investigative reporter.

They don't like that.

Hypocrites.

It's The Next Trial of the Century

Screen Shot 2013-06-04 at 9.21.38 AM.png

Police Officers in Sanford, Florida have been told they can't take any time off.

Why?

1370309861382.jpg

Because the next "trial of the century" is taking place in their backyard.

Jury selection begins next week in the trial of George Zimmerman. Zimmerman shot and killed teenager Trayvon Martin. He has been charged with second-degree murder in the 17-year-old's death. Zimmerman is claiming it was self defense.

The media is already claiming their spots near the Seminole County Courthouse.

Police have bumped up patrols. “Through whenever the trial is complete, there are plans that are in place. Again, because of the sensitivity of the plans I can’t release that information,” said Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith.

The media won't have far to look for good soundbites. Several areas across Sanford will be designated for protestors.

Jury selection could take up to 3 weeks, which would mean the trial will get underway in time for the July sweeps.

Nancy Grace and her gang of hooligans from HLN are expected to out in force in central Florida.

Local stations in Orlando have held several news staff meetings to map out secret games plans as to how they will cover the trial.

It's going to big the biggest trial ever....well...until the next one.

Breaking the Bond with Breaking News

WDRB in Louisville is doing away with "breaking news"...because let's be honest, breaking news is rarely ever breaking and often times it's not even news.

While stations have basically broken the "breaking news" model, WDRB has decided to go the other way and never have breaking news on their air.

The station brags in a new promo they they won't "break news" anymore. Let's cue up the video:

OKC Weather Anchor's Bad Advice?

Screen Shot 2013-06-04 at 6.21.38 AM.png

FTVLive was watching KFOR's coverage of the tornados whipping through the area on Friday night.

Meteorologist Mike Morgan told viewers several times to "get underground or start heading south" if they couldn't find shelter.

It seems many of the viewers may have taken his advice and headed to their cars.

Screen Shot 2013-06-04 at 6.09.53 AM.png

Many of those killed were stuck in traffic on I-35 and I-40 and at least a few people think Morgan maybe to blame for the traffic back up.

The KFOR weatherman is getting a lot of criticism on social media.  Viewers and other meteorologists say Morgan should have told viewers to stay where they are.

NOAA Meteorologist Patrick Marsh says that "What KFOR told people to do could probably be considered a form of negligence."

Screen Shot 2013-06-04 at 6.15.00 AM.png

The station has yet to comment, but it will be interesting to see if they or Morgan say anything. Also, how will they handle their advice to viewers when the next tornado sweeps through the area?

Stay tuned...

Philly Anchor Cat Fight

Philly Anchor Cat Fight

t appears that the relationship between KYW (Philly) Anchors Nicole Brewer (left) and Carol Erickson (right) is.... shall we say a bit icy.

Brewer is the News Anchor while Erickson handles the weather duties and if I was the KYW News Director, I'd have a referee standing by during the newscast.

The video shows that of the two, Brewer comes off as meaner of the two. Erickson, for her part, doesn’t seem crazy about her young rival, but also, somewhat tragically, finds herself helplessly eager to please.

You wonder why someone from news management hasn't stepped in and stopped this petty back and forth? But, then again viewers might be tuning in more and more waiting the fists to fly and the hair pulling to start?

The video evidence of a good old  fashion cat fight is up after the hop.

Former St. Louis Anchor Weighs in on Larry Connors

Former St. Louis Anchor Weighs in on Larry Connors

Former KMOV Anchor Julius Hunter has been asked about his thoughts on the firing of his former colleague Larry Connors?

You know the story, Connors was canned for a Facebook post about how the IRS was "hammering" him. Connors has since sued the station for discrimination...claiming that his black female co-anchor was making more than him.

Hunter, says he has been asked about the Connors saga all over town and he decided to break his silence on the issue in the local paper.

Of course, ever the anchorman, Hunter makes his story all about him and really doesn't say anything about Hunter.

But you can read between the lines and tell where he stands.

After the jump you can read what he has to say.
