Why Nielsen Just doesn't Matter Anymore

Why Nielsen Just doesn't Matter Anymore

Could Nielsen and it's diaries be going the way of the VRC and Blockbuster?

A story in Wired magazine suggest that the way Nielsen tracks viewers is out of dat in the social media world.

The write that on February 7, the fourth season of Community kicked off on NBC. It was something of a shock that the show had survived for so long. It ranked 193rd among broadcast shows. In May 2012, series creator and showrunner Dan Harmon had been unceremoniously canned. And on the night it aired, the season premiere pulled in just 4 million viewers. That’s a mere quarter of the audience enjoyed by ratings juggernauts like Two and a Half Men or The Big Bang Theory. It even underperformed a rerun of the ABC reality show Shark Tank on the Nielsen charts.

Until recently, those 4 million viewers would have been the end of the story. Just a few years ago, similar niche favorites like Jericho and Firefly were summarily executed for such numbers. In fact, cult legend Freaks and Geeks averaged nearly 7 million viewers in its single, 1999-2000 season before getting canceled. But that night in February,Community accomplished something that none of those shows ever had the chance to do—it spawned two worldwide trending topics on Twitter.

Anchor Shake UP Coming to WABC?

Anchor Shake UP Coming to WABC?

There is a potential shakeup in the works at WABC/Ch. 7

Insiders are buzzing that the station brass may move afternoon anchor David Navarro to the channel’s morning newscast and replace him with lead sportscaster Rob Powers.

“It would just be an easy fit,” an insider told the Daily News about pairing Powers with brunette bombshell anchor Liz Cho.

A few years ago, Powers seemed to be a shoo-in at the anchor desk with Cho. Then Navarro joined the station in late 2010.

Cho “thought that [Powers] would be a better fit on that show. David [Navarro] came out of nowhere,” said the insider.

Will Sinclair's Conservative Slant work in Seattle?

Will Sinclair's Conservative Slant work in Seattle?

nclair is buying KOMO in Seattle and it might be like ordering Dunkin Donuts coffee in the land of Starbucks.

The conservation slant of Sinclair might not go over well in the Left Coast liberal leaning city.

The Seattle Times writes thatSinclair Broadcast Group executives said they will bring resources and stability to KOMO TV and 19 other television stations they’ll get by acquiring Seattle-based Fisher Communications.

If Sinclair’s past is any indicator, they may also bring their conservative political leanings, even to one of the most liberal cities in the country.

“The track record of Sinclair suggests that Seattle is about to get a Fox News equivalent in a local television channel,” said David Domke, acting chairman of the University of Washington School of Communication.
