New News Director Hired in Phoenix

It seems that Tegna has been on a News Director hiring spree. Yesterday, FTVLive told you that Tegna named a new ND at their  Corpus Christi station. And, they are about to name a new news boss in Sacramento.

The company, which has been changing ND's at many stations, also just named a new News Director at their Phoenix station KPNX.

Starting on Monday, George Davilas is the new News Director at KPNX.

Tegna says that Davilas is a veteran executive producer, showrunner and programming development executive. He has nearly 20 years of leadership experience at ABC/Disney, NBCUniversal, CBS Television Distribution, Warner Bros/Telepictures, Debmar-Mercury, Court TV News and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.

“George brings a unique and exciting skill set to our news organization, with a special focus on and passion for storytelling,” said President and General Manager, John Misner. “He is a genuine leader committed to serving our great state and local community.”

“I am honored to lead the 12 News newsroom. The station’s award-winning legacy, trusted news reputation, sophisticated digital perspective and dedication to the people of Arizona are all elements of a winning formula.” said Davilas.

Here is the internal email that was sent to the staff and obtained by FTVLive:

Subject: We have a new News Director

All,

For those of you who were not in the newsroom when I made this announcement a few minutes ago, here is a copy of the release announcing George Davilas as our new News Director.  I again also want to thank Ivan Hernandez and Stacey Roberts for their leadership while we were without a News Director.

George and I have spent lots of time together talking about ideas for growing 12 News’ audience by building on our strong journalism while also evolving our broadcast and digital content. I’m confident that his creativity, experience, education and fresh perspective will be very meaningful to all of us at 12 News.  There are more good times ahead for 12 News!

I look forward to introducing you to George in person when he starts in his new role this coming Monday.

See you soon,

John
