Two and Out and Headed to Texas

After just two years in her first TV news job, Kate Devine has left KAKE (Wichita) and is landing at Graham’s KSAT in San Antonio.

It used to be that you would need much more than just two years in the business to land a job in the 31st market.

But, with so many leaving the business, and stations looking to hire cheaper talent, here we are.

This was Devine’s post to social media.

“It’s hard to believe I’m writing this, but next week will be my final week at KAKE News. ❤️

Nearly two years ago, I moved to Wichita for my first full-time reporting job after graduating from Mizzou. I came here excited, nervous and ready to learn, but I had no idea just how much this city, this newsroom and the people I’ve met along the way would change me.

Wichita gave me the opportunity to cover stories I will carry with me for the rest of my career. I’ve sat with families during some of the hardest moments of their lives, celebrated with people during some of their happiest, asked difficult questions, chased breaking news, stood outside in just about every kind of Kansas weather imaginable and gotten to tell the stories of people who may otherwise never have had their voices heard.

I’ve grown more in these last two years than I ever could have imagined, not only as a journalist, but as a person.

To every person who trusted me with their story, thank you. There is an incredible amount of trust involved in allowing a reporter into your life, especially during moments that are painful or deeply personal, and I have never taken that responsibility lightly.

To everyone who has watched my stories, stopped me while I was out somewhere, sent me a message, shared one of my posts or followed along on Facebook, thank you. Truly. The support I’ve received from people across Kansas has meant more to me than you know. 💕

And to the photographers, producers, anchors, reporters and everyone behind the scenes at KAKE who has been part of this chapter with me, thank you for the long nights, the laughs, the breaking news, the live shots, the crazy days and all of the memories in between. I couldn't have done it without each and every one of you.

This was my first newsroom home, and no matter where this career takes me, Wichita will always be an incredibly important part of my story.

I still have a few more days here, so I’m not saying goodbye quite yet. 🥹

But a new chapter is coming, and I’m SO excited to finally share where I’m headed next week. ❤️
