Trump Lashes Out at CNN by Blocking Network from Air Force One

Donald Trump’s ongoing crusade against mainstream media took a fresh and contentious turn as the White House officially bumped CNN from the Air Force One press pool for a presidential trip to Tennessee.

The decision to swap out CNN for the conservative outlet Real America's Voice came hard on the heels of a federal court victory for the press. Just days prior, U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly issued a temporary restraining order forcing the administration to restore hard passes and grounds access to CNN, MS NOW, and Politico after an abrupt, unconstitutional lockout.

While that judicial intervention forced open the gates to the executive complex, the White House quickly exploited a technicality: the judge's order did not explicitly cover presidential travel logistics or the decades-old rotational video pool.Capitalizing on that loophole, the administration sidelined CNN for the flight to Knoxville, where Trump attended the University of Tennessee versus University of Texas college football game, and sidelined the standard network pool structure altogether for the journey.

Trump was loudly booed at the game.

The blatant end-run around the judiciary sparked immediate outrage from press freedom advocates and triggered new alarm bells over the future of independent oversight. Early Saturday morning, as the travel drama unfolded, Trump took straight to social media to double down on his attacks, posting: "FAKE NEWS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE WHITE HOUSE!" and complaining that virtually all of the network's coverage remains aggressively critical.

With the 14-day temporary restraining order ticking down and legal battles mounting over the boundaries of executive power, the administration's willingness to openly defy the spirit, if not the exact letter, of judicial oversight signals that the White House press war is only escalating.
