The Media Sues Donald Trump for White House Ban

Major news organizations are pushing back hard against the Trump administration following an unprecedented restriction on press access.

CNN, MS NOW, and Politico filed a joint federal lawsuit on Monday after their reporters were abruptly barred from the White House complex over the weekend and had their electronic press credentials deactivated.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, argues that the selective ban constitutes a blatant violation of the First Amendment and the due process clause of the Fifth Amendment, accusing the administration of engaging in unlawful viewpoint discrimination simply because the president dislikes the content of their reporting.

The sudden exclusion escalated tensions following an announcement on social media where President Trump declared the outlets banned over coverage he labeled as fake news.

The legal complaint points out that stripping journalists of their ability to perform firsthand newsgathering at the executive branch inflicts immediate and irreparable harm on the outlets and sets a dangerous precedent that chills the speech of the broader press corps.

The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, who previously oversaw a similar media access challenge during the first Trump administration.
