The Bishop is Leaving the Tegna Fold

After a staggering 47 years in broadcast news, including a remarkable 42 years at the very same station, KHOU Managing Editor Bill Bishop is hanging up his headphones and stepping into retirement.

In an industry where station-hopping has always been the norm, Bishop’s 42-year run at the Tegna CBS affiliate in Houston is a unicorn achievement. Over more than four decades in the KHOU newsroom, he worked his way through the ranks, handling virtually every job the newsroom could throw at him. From coordinating continuous coverage of catastrophic floods, hurricanes, and the massive shifts in Houston's sports and civic landscape (from the Oilers leaving to the arrival of the Texans), Bishop was the steady hand guiding the journalism.

He helped shape a newsroom culture defined by energy, sharp instincts, and a relentless commitment to getting it right. Reflecting on his longevity, Bishop noted that while his mind still feels 30, his body is ready for a break. He plans to spend his well-earned retirement traveling and enjoying time with his wife, sons, and grandson.

As he signs off for good, television news loses one of its true institutional knowledge banks—and a legendary newsroom fixture who proved you can spend a lifetime at one shop and still make an indelible mark.
