Bribing Voters

The President of the United States stood up on national television and offered up a blatant political bribe to the American people.

Vote for Republicans in the midterms, Trump promised, and every adult citizen will get a $5,000 "Trump dividend."

Of course, you might remember that when Trump rolled out his sweeping tariffs, he promised to hand out $2,000 checks. That money never materialized, and neither would this $5,000 fantasy.

Let's look at the basic math: funding a $5,000 payout for roughly 270 million American adults would cost about $1.35 trillion.

Also, there is a federal statute for this: 18 U.S.C. 597, expenditures to influence voting, a fine or up to 2 years if it's willful. This certainly sounded willful to me.

Predictably, Fox News host and Trump bootlicker, Sean Hannity fell in line to cheerlead the proposal, while Vice President JD Vance tried to clean up the logistics by claiming it would be funded entirely by tariff revenue. Real-world economic data shows those tariffs pull in a fraction of that amount—roughly $150 billion—leaving a trillion-dollar chasm between the rhetoric and reality.

Yet, much of the mainstream media covered the pitch with a straight face, treating it like a legitimate policy proposal rather than what it actually was: a desperate, unachievable election-year gimmick.

That’s the story. Full stop.

Here’s a clip from Fox News and just imagine if you will, how this story would have been covered by Fox, if Obama did this.
