The Legend Sign Off

Longtime Philadelphia meteorologist Cecily Tynan delivered her final weathercast on Monday, bringing an end to a dominant 31-year run at WPVI, the Disney/ABC owned-and-operated powerhouse in Market #4.

Tynan, who has served as Chief Meteorologist since 2009, joined the legacy station in 1995 from Las Vegas. She worked her way up from weekend duties to anchor the market’s top-rated evening weather blocks on the station's flagship Action News.

Her final broadcast featured appearances from current co-anchor Rick Williams and legendary retired main anchor Jim Gardner, who returned to the City Avenue studio to send off his longtime colleague.

"She is such a compelling television personality who really owns the screen when she’s on camera. The rest of us just appeared on TV," Gardner said during the broadcast. "I’m not sure people give her enough credit for being a scientist, which is what she is first and foremost. She’s so committed to keeping viewers safe and informed when the weather presents serious challenges."

At 57, Tynan is stepping away from the daily grind entirely, opting to spend time between Pennsylvania and Florida rather than jumping to another market or network role.

Her exit is part of a broader generational changing of the guard in the Philadelphia market. Over the past couple of years, local newsrooms have seen mass departures of veteran talent, including WCAU anchor Tracy Davidson (nearly 30 years), KYW morning anchor Jim Donovan (22 years), WTXF investigative reporter Jeff Cole (25 years), and Gardner himself.

Station management at the ABC O&O has not officially named Tynan's successor in the chief chair for the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts. However, the station has plenty of internal bench strength: both Karen Rogers and Adam Joseph have more than two decades of tenure at WPVI and are the frontrunners for the primary evening slots.
