Sinclair Makes Chops in Texas

The truth of the matter is that when corporate broadcast owners want to cut costs, they rarely just come out and say, "Hey, we want to save a buck."Instead, they fire up the PR spin machine.

Case in point: Sinclair KEYE CBS Austin.

The station has quietly handed pink slips to weekday morning anchor John-Carlos Estrada and morning traffic anchor Jenna Wilson.

Estrada had been with the station for seven years, anchoring CBS Austin This Morning while pulling double duty producing award-winning local history segments. Wilson joined the morning team last year.

How did Sinclair frame kicking two solid journalists to the curb?

Here is the corporate speak sent out in a statement:

"Beginning mid-September, CBS Austin will debut a refreshed format for 'CBS Austin This Morning,' designed to better serve our audience while continuing to deliver the local journalism and community coverage our viewers expect. As part of that transition, the station has made the difficult decision to eliminate two positions."

Translation from corporate-speak to plain English: We eliminated positions to cut payroll, and we’re calling it a "refreshed format" so it sounds like an improvement.

Because nothing says "better serving the audience" quite like having fewer people in the building to put on a morning newscast.

Estrada took the high road on social media, expressing gratitude for his seven years in Central Texas and noting that he'll be using his newfound free time to finish his upcoming book with UT Press.

Meanwhile, Sinclair gets to shave two more salaries off the books while asking the remaining staff to do more with less.

Just another day in corporate broadcasting.
