Freelance writer Brittany Romano learned that lesson the hard way after Vanity Fair kicked her to the curb for smiling on a courtroom livestream.
Romano was inside the courtroom covering the high-profile Lindsay Clancy trial when the camera caught her flashing a big smile and a wink. The clip quickly went viral on social media, drawing widespread backlash from viewers who called the behavior completely inappropriate given the gruesome nature of the proceedings.
Romano tried to walk back the viral moment, claiming the expression wasn’t malicious.
"I smile through anxiety," Romano said. "I smile when I'm uncomfortable."
Vanity Fair wasn't buying the excuse.
The magazine swiftly pulled her credentials, stating the incident represented "clear conflicts with our editorial standards and processes," and notified the court that she was no longer covering the trial on their behalf.
