Oh, CNN....

Just when you think CNN can’t step on their own crank, the cable net manages to outdo itself.

Following the death of global icon Dolly Parton at age 80, CNN was covering the passing of one of the most recognizable human beings on planet Earth.

Dolly Parton has been in the spotlight for over six decades. She has appeared on thousands of magazine covers, starred in blockbuster movies, graced countless red carpets, and has millions of archival images licensed and sitting right there in CNN’s photo database.

So, naturally, what did CNN put on the air during Laura Coates Live?

You can’t make this up.

Instead of showing the actual Country Music Hall of Famer, CNN managed to grab an image of Kelly Vohnn, a tribute artist who performs in Vegas.

The impersonator herself said she only realized she was on national television when her phone started blowing up with texts from friends who were watching CNN’s coverage and wondered why she was on the screen.

The network was forced to issue an apology to the Parton family:

"We regret the error and apologize to the Parton family."

How does this happen at a major cable news network?

Did anyone in the control room or on the graphics desk bother to do a two-second sanity check before pushing the graphic to air? We aren't talking about an obscure local politician or a reclusive author where reference photos are scarce. This is Dolly Parton.

If CNN can’t even reliably distinguish one of the most famous women in pop culture history from a Vegas tribute act, it really makes you wonder what else is slipping through the cracks.
