Fired on the Air

I worked with an Anchor at one time, who just got done anchoring the newscast and as he was walking back to the newsroom, he was called into the mens room and was fired.

I think this story beats that one.

In a display of wild media-industry timing, long-time ESPN NFL analyst Ryan Clark was pulled right off the air mid-broadcast after learning he was being laid off.

During Monday's taping of NFL Live, Clark—who earned over $2 million annually and had been with the Mothership for more than a decade—disappeared from the set mid-show and did not return for the final segments.

Reports indicate ESPN originally planned to notify Clark on Tuesday morning as part of a broader wave of cuts sweeping through both Bristol and NFL Network. However, after media outlets tipped off ESPN's PR team that they were about to publish the story of his impending departure, network brass panicked. Wanting to avoid having Clark find out about his firing via social media mid-show, executives scrambled to yank him off the set during the live broadcast to deliver the news in person.

While the sudden exit made for jaw-dropping optics, Clark’s standing with network executives had reportedly been souring for months over various controversies, including an on-and-off-air dispute with colleague Peter Schrager last season.

Getting fired in the bathroom right after a show is brutal, but getting yanked off the air during a live broadcast because the press leaked your pink slip? That takes the cake.
