Middle Class Journalists?

WGRZ (Buffalo) MMJ Nate Benson wrote on social media how tough it is for Journalists to make ends meet.

To any longtime journalists, this is not news.

In my first jobs in TV news, I would often make trips to a local pawn shop, sell some items, just to pay my bills.

I think the big difference between those days and today is that as you worked your way up through the industry, you would make more money.

These days, the money being offered is low and raises are either non-existent or are not even keeping up with inflation.

Often times you see TV news jobs posted and they are paying just above minimum wage. You can see news jobs posted, which are not even paying as much as a job at Panda Express.

Media companies will likely find someone to take the low-paying job, but are you getting a candidate of high quality?

The difference between now and the past was back then you took a job making next to nothing, knowing that you would work your way up to a bigger market, making a livable wage.

These days, that is no longer the promise.

The biggest station owner, Nexstar, is known for paying some of the lowest salaries. The old adage of “you get what you pay for” is so true and the industry is hurting because of it.
