CNN Stars are Living on Borrowed Time
/The looming merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery is being framed by critics not just as a corporate takeover, but as a potential "purge" of CNN’s most recognizable faces—one that would provide Donald Trump with a massive public victory.
Two prominent press freedom groups, Freedom of the Press Foundation and Reporters Without Borders, are sounding the alarm over allegations that Larry Ellison promised the Trump administration "favors" to secure regulatory approval for the deal. Central to these allegations is the "CBS playbook"—a reference to the sweeping staffing and editorial shifts led by Bari Weiss at CBS News following the Ellison family’s acquisition of Paramount last year.
According to a letter sent by the groups to Paramount’s chief legal officer, Ellison reportedly told Trump he would implement that same strategy at CNN. This would likely mean the high-profile ousting of the network's veteran anchors and commentators—the very "big names" Trump has spent years labeling as "fake news."
For Donald Trump, the removal of CNN’s top brass wouldn't just be a change in media management; it would be a trophy. After years of adversarial relations with the network, Trump is expected to claim credit for the "collapse" of his critics. If these "sweeping" staff changes occur, it provides him a ready-made platform to brag that he successfully forced a total overhaul of the network that has been his primary media foil.
The press freedom groups, acting as shareholders, are demanding access to internal documents under Delaware law to investigate what they call a "corrupt exchange." They argue that promising editorial heads on a platter to win government favors is a breach of fiduciary duty and could lead to civil or criminal penalties.
While investors focus on the $31-per-share windfall, the media landscape is bracing for a transformation that could see CNN’s most famous voices pushed out, leaving the door wide open for Donald Trump to take a victory lap.
