Nexstar Going Back to The Future to Save Money

FTVLive told you that Nexstar cut a number of anchors across their three biggest markets.

Anchors were chopped in Chicago, LA, and New York.

One post from a WGN (Chicago) employee who was let go may tell you what Nexstar’s plan is to save money.

In an IG post by former WGN talent Ray Cortopassi, he posted this on one of his slides, talking about his exit.

If you look back at the 1960s and early 70s, most of the newscasts were anchored by a single talent.

Of course, back then, all the newscasts were just a half hour in length, as opposed to the large block of news you see these days.

Think about it, anchors in major markets are often making $ 300K or more. You cut a bunch of co-anchors, and you can see that the savings add up quickly.

Of course, the newscasts may not look as polished, and you still need to cover sick days and vacations, but I don’t think the Nexstar suits care about all that. Those tasks will fall on news management.

Will a single-anchor show look better? Most likely no, it will not.

But, this is about money. How it looks, really is not factored into the equation.
