Well, Looks Like This Deal Isn't Happening
/The potential for Netflix to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery—and with it, CNN—just faced a major political roadblock. While standard antitrust reviews are meant to be independent of the White House, Donald Trump’s recent public attack on Netflix signals a return to a "hands-on" approach that could derail the deal. On Saturday, Trump demanded the streaming giant fire board member Susan Rice, the former U.S. Ambassador and National Security Adviser, following her comments regarding political accountability.
This direct intervention shifts the narrative from a business merger to a political battleground. By targeting a key member of Netflix’s leadership, the President has telegraphed that any company housing his political rivals will face immense friction. Historically, Trump has shown a willingness to use executive influence to punish media entities he perceives as hostile, and with CNN sitting under the Warner Bros. umbrella, a Netflix-led acquisition now looks increasingly toxic to federal regulators sensitive to the President’s whims.
For Netflix, the path forward is now a minefield. Refusing to oust Rice risks drawing the ire of the DOJ and FTC, while complying would trigger a massive internal and public relations crisis. This political noise significantly cools the prospects of a merger, as the risk of a blocked deal now outweighs the potential rewards of owning the CNN parent company.
