Until the Bosses Care, This Behavior Will Not Change
/Yesterday, FTVLive should you a video of a WLKY Anchor delaying getting to the set until the newscast had already started.
If you didn’t see the video, here it is again.
FTVLive heard from a number of people, including some good News Directors that were outraged by the Anchor’s attitude and unprofessionalism.
Here is one email, with our take on the backside.
Scott:
I watched in horror as that Kentucky anchor cavalierly picked out jewelry and applied lip gloss while production was doing a three minute countdown for her to get on set! Not only did she prioritize her earrings over her IFB, but she posted the video online as if it's some kind of flex! WTF!!! What if there was breaking news off the top? What if the rundown changed? How is the booth supposed to communicate those changes to her without her earpiece?! Who is training these people?!!
I've been in the business 30 years. This is the sort of behavior that would normally have resulted in a suspension. But this is what happens when management is asleep at the wheel. Absolutely ridiculous.
The bottom line is that many news directors aren’t paying attention, or just don’t care. I have worked in many stations where talent was required to be on the set, plugged in, and mic’d up 10 minutes before air. When newscasts ran together with a change of anchors, the new anchors had to be in the studio, plugged in, and mic-checked by the last commercial break of the previous newscast.
Yet, here is an anchor that is unprofessional. She admits she “chatted” too much before the show and then flexes on social media.
If you’re looking to work in TV news, I would cross WLKY off your list and find a station that cares a bit more about their product.
But hey, that’s just me…
