A Rocky Start
/New White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia held her first official press briefing on Tuesday, and by all accounts inside the room, it was a rough introduction.
Observers noted that Zacharia appeared extremely nervous at the podium. Making matters even more unusual, she took only three questions from the press pool—a tightly restricted approach that veterans of the White House press room say they have virtually never seen before from a new occupant of the briefing room.
But the nervous debut isn't the only thing drawing scrutiny. Questions are now swirling regarding her background and whether she has accurately represented her past profession.
In multiple biographical bios and during television appearances—including on Fox News, where she was explicitly introduced and labeled on-air as an attorney—Zacharia has been described as a lawyer. A LinkedIn profile reportedly notes she earned a law degree from Pepperdine University.
However, media reports and investigative inquiries point to a glaring omission: there appears to be no public record or evidence showing that Zacharia has ever been admitted to the bar or licensed to practice law in any U.S. state or Washington, D.C.
As the newly minted face of the administration's messaging tries to find her footing, the burning question in media and legal circles is simple: Is she actually a lawyer?
