The End of the Hour is Tonight
/Tonight marks the final broadcast for the weekend edition of the PBS News Hour.
The program is signing off for the last time following this evening's show, a casualty of significant federal budget cuts that have rocked public media.
The decision to end the weekend run comes just days after the board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB)—the agency responsible for steering millions in federal funds to public stations—voted to dissolve the non-profit entirely. The CPB is currently winding down operations after Congress rescinded its funding this past summer.
On Friday, anchors Geoff Bennett and Amna Nawaz confirmed to viewers that PBS News had to make the "difficult decision to rework" staffing and programming. The network had previously cut the western edition of the program last month.
PBS News Hour once relied on the CPB for roughly 35% of its annual funding, but that sponsorship officially ended in July.
Weekend anchor John Yang, who is set to depart PBS News at the end of the month, praised the "small but mighty team" that kept the show running during major events, including the assassination attempt on Donald Trump and the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel.
While the weekend broadcast ends tonight, Yang noted that many members of the team are staying on to create "exciting new programming" for PBS stations.
